Today we’d like to introduce you to Marianne F. Buckley Curran.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Marianne. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
As an artist, I strive to communicate through visuals . I have been drawing, painting and creating a variety of forms of art since I can remember. I like to think of it as visuals in all shapes and sizes. I am fortunate to have another career in addition to my personal creation process and that is to encourage and guide youth to engage their creative energies. I teach Visual Art and previously, Physical Education which utilizes both of those aspects of learning. For an artist to be active and surrounded by creative thinking is ideal and I believe my art and myself benefit immensely from that environment.
As a practicing profession of art and education, I am constantly looking for opportunities for growth, learning new techniques, broadening my knowledge, expanding my horizons so to say… I am a firm believer in the learning process and constantly fueling the intellectual, spiritual, physical and emotional components of our lives.
Twenty plus years ago I started hosting fine art events and marketing other artists’ work in the Canton area. I had the opportunity to study and work with some established artists, Eli Shamir, Joanne F. Regan, Bob Lesieur and most recently John Kilroy. Through their guidance and supplemented with a variety of classes at Mass Art, SMFA and at the Art Institute I learned about design, color theory, portraiture, landscape and figure drawing, using a variety of media.
Presently I maintain an active studio in Hull, teaching privately, creating my own pieces and teaching visual art at the South Shore Charter Public School in Norwell.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Keeping family life a priority, the challenge has been prioritizing time and energy to create. The beautiful unique area that we live in is inspirational and also distracting… so many things to do and see.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Locale Color – what should we know?
I create in a large variety of genre. I would characterize my art as that which conveys a feeling or captures a sense of time. Art is a visual form of communication. So much of what we experience in life is through this sense. If, as an artist, I can capture a moment in time and convey that into a painting that other people can also reflect upon, experience and hopefully appreciate then I have met my goal. I strive for three things when I create a composition.
First to express the idea, “What am I trying to say?” The piece must have a clear message. Secondly, that message must be delivered in a good design that enhances and supports the objective and thirdly but no less important, is the effect of light on the form, with local colors and in conjunction with what I am saying.
For the past few years, I have dedicated myself to the development of my personal artistic voice. The creative process, which has given substance to my voice, is not only fed and stimulated visually but also through my additional senses of smell, hearing, taste and touch. Living in Hull, I can witness first hand the coolness of an ocean breeze, the taste of the salt air, the fine spray upon my face, the crash of the tide upon the bank and the vision of the sun dancing off the surface water. It is this example of assimilation that combines with individual uniqueness to create my art and I believe this sets me apart.
Previously, I have created murals for Canton and Hull Public Libraries and private residences. My high school students (South Shore Charter Public School) are working in conjunction with the Outdoor Art Council of Hingham and Hingham High School Art students to create a historical rendition in their downtown. I have been the recipient of a Massachusetts Cultural Grant and my work is in both private and corporate collections.
I am reinvesting myself in a project with a Scituate author and business owner Pam Nealon-LaBreck (Whimsy in Cohasset), to complete a children’s book, Beach Days. My paintings are currently displayed in Front Street Gallery, Scituate, Nantasket Galley, Hull and my studio. My work is online at www.localecolor.com and I can be followed at Locale Color Studio on Instagram.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I would definitely state that my family is my biggest support system. My husband and our sons, now men, were my staff for shows and events when I was just starting and are still engaged in lending assistance on an on-call basis, helping set up, switch out, etc. I can still count on them.
As I mentioned before I trained under established artists, Eli Shamir (Isreal), Joanne F. Regan, Bob Lesieur and most recently John Kilroy, who resides in the South Shore Area as well as further education at Mass Art, The Art Institute and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts.
