Meet George Middleton

Today we’d like to introduce you to George Middleton.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I was born into a creative family of artists, musicians, and writers. I learned watercolors from my mother whose love of nature and God took hold in me as a child. Growing up with a river and cornfields in my backyard, I loved the outdoor life and learned to hunt and fish, collected specimens, and even learned some taxidermy. I was particularly obsessed with birds- which became the subjects of my first paintings.

During my high school and college age years, I studied art and spiritual subjects. I then began my career as a professional, and in addition to pursuing my own art, I’ve worked as an illustrator, a mural painter and scenic artist, and in faux finishes and decorative painting. My work has been used in publishing, advertising, film, theater, and in public and private interiors.

Please tell us about your art.
I paint nature subjects, figures, and portraits. I work in two basic modes: a realist approach where I interpret that which I perceive outwardly with my senses, and in a narrative fashion to express an inner experience by treating the human form as energy in transition- to suggest an expanded awareness beyond the physical.

Using various dry media, watercolor, and painting software, I develop ideas by sketching from life, and using my own imagination, memories, and photo references. This process often produces related digital works and pigment inkjet prints.

My primary painting medium of choice is water-based acrylic for its wide technical flexibility. My approach combines pre-planned compositions with spontaneity during painting by layering, covering, or partially removing areas to generate unforeseen forms and discover hidden detail.

As a child I was enthralled with nature, in its endless beauty and magic. I was filled with a joy for life and felt connected to everything. I felt that reality was a divinely inspired unfathomable mystery which could not be explained- only experienced. I began to paint as a way to express and share this love. I hope my paintings act to stimulate a similar experience for the viewer, as a reminder of their own connection with the spirit.

Choosing a creative or artistic path comes with many financial challenges. Any advice for those struggling to focus on their artwork due to financial concerns?
Yes. Try to work every day- even if only for a few minutes. I’ve found that committing to a daily practice is the key to rapid progress, and a sustained and lasting satisfaction with my creative path.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
You can see and purchase my original paintings and limited edition Giclée prints on my website or at my studio, which is open to the public every first Saturday of the month during Western Avenue Studios and Lofts First Saturday Open Studios, and by appointment.
