Meet Jeffrey Proctor of Proctor Ski and Board

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeffrey Proctor.

Jeffrey, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My journey with skiing started at a very early age in a cow pasture just a few feet away from my parents’ house in Hopkinton, New Hampshire. Year after year, my passion and love for that sport kept growing. I was eager to learn more and experience skiing at a “real” ski area.

When I turned 11, a friend of my parents took me to my first big ski trip, Mount Sunapee. That trip changed my life forever. I never stopped skiing since. I’d even often hitchhike to Sunapee just to ski. A few years later and after graduating from college, I started working as a ski instructor at Mount Sunapee and coached as well the ski team at Sunapee High School where I taught Social Studies and English.

After I got married and moved to Hudson, NH, I worked as a part-time ski instructor at Indian Head Ski Area. And that’s where I met my partner Ken Jones.

In 1984 Ken Jones and I opened the well-known Ken Jones Ski Mart in Nashua, NH. The store was a huge success for many years. Unfortunately, in 2013, Ken Jones passed away, that incident changed my life again. I couldn’t stay in the same business without my partner, but didn’t want to retire.

Since it’s never too late or too old, I decided to start a new challenge in my life! I purchased and renovated the abandoned Dexter Shoe Store in Nashua that is a minute away from my old store.

In the spring of 2013, I opened Proctor Ski & Board, a red building that is home to the best winter fun equipment and apparel at the best prices. We all love the new store and we hope that you’ll love too!!

Has it been a smooth road?
Of course nothing is easy. If it is, then it’s not worth it!

As a small business, we faced too many challenges. However, the important one was when I decided to open a new store with a new name. It wasn’t easy to get the loan or even to move and change the name of my store to Proctor Ski & Board. I could never have done this without talented and special employees like Donna Hemond. Donna is the best clothing buyer in New England and general manager of Proctors’. Thank you Donna for your 20 something years.

In addition, because it’s a seasonal business, warm winters with little snow are always a struggle. But we’re blessed to have the most loyal customers and employees ever! So thank you for your support and trust!

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Proctor Ski & Board – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
