Meet Lindsay and Steve Bergeron of AMP Fitness Boston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsay and Steve Bergeron.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
In 2013, after spending years working in traditional gym settings, we were compelled to create a space that would better be suited to help people succeed with their fitness goals. We wanted it to be something that was more than just a “gym”.

In creating AMP we wanted it to be a space where we were able to provide expert fitness in a wildly positive and inclusive environment in order for people to live their best life.

We felt that this didn’t exist in Boston and the traditional gym didn’t set people up for success. The focus has been on creating a fun setting where people can come in and get expert coaching and guidance and have the ability to work on themselves in a non-competitive atmosphere.

In order to do this, we built a team of 6 coaches that truly care about people, top training practices to help with getting results, and a solid mission and core values.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As any first-time business owner knows, it’s never a smooth road. Construction and opening took about 6 months longer than planned and initially it was just Steve running the whole show. We also bootstrapped the whole thing on a shoestring budget in about a 5,000sf space which was no easy task. We started with a few kettlebells and bands and used every cent of the revenue to purchase equipment along the way and pay our rent.

There is a steep learning curve to the business side of things since all of our degrees are in education and exercise physiology. It has more or less been constantly reading, learning and trial by fire.

For the first 2 years, we didn’t have the budget to put towards traditional marketing so our growth has been completely by word of mouth. It gave us time to grow in the direction we have wanted and have the ability to really cultivate intimate relationships and an amazing community. We believe that these two components are what is missing from traditional gym settings. We wouldn’t have been able to do it without our amazing coaches and AMP family members.

AMP Fitness Boston – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
AMP fitness is a boutique personal training studio that is independently owned and operated by a husband and wife team. (Steve and Lindsay Bergeron). Our main services are semi-private personal training, small group ‘team-training’ and nutrition coaching.

The coaches at AMP are among the most passionate and educated in our industry and only provide and implement the most cutting-edge and up to date training protocols.

Their focus is on educating, guiding, and empowering each member to develop healthy habits and nail their individual fitness goals while having fun doing it. What we’re most proud of and what we really feel sets us apart is the inclusive community we have built.

We understand how uncomfortable fitness and body image can make people feel so to have created a space where people truly feel welcome and accepted makes us feel really good. Our hope is that places like AMP will inspire change in other facilities in the fitness industry and beyond.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
One of our proudest moments at AMP was last year raising over $8,000 for local charities and realizing that what we do is about much more than just the fitness. It’s really the community that does awesome things and the fitness we provide helps everyone be their best selves and have a positive impact on the world. It’s really cool to be able to give back since we’ve had so much help along the way.
