Today we’d like to introduce you to Colleen Beaton.
Colleen, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve been a sports fan my entire life. However, if you told me ten years ago that, after spending a majority of my career focused on experience design, that I would be running and working on building an online community for female sports fans today I, well, I probably would have believed you! Starting a community like Sports Are From Venus has been something I have always wanted to do, but only recently did I finally decide to take a risk and invest in this dream.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Getting Sports Are From Venus up and running has been a slow but steady process. I had a fantastic web designer who did a great job taking my vision and bringing it to life and I have been extremely lucky to find fantastic writers and a social media manager who is dedicated to producing amazing content.
However, I’m funding the site on my own right now and that has made things a bit challenging. I have to be very careful to make sure I’m prioritizing the site’s needs appropriately to give us the best chance at growth.
Sometimes that means putting things that we are really excited about off for a bit. With all of that said, though, I am thrilled with what we have been able to do in one short year.
Sports Are From Venus – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Sports Are From Venus is an online sports magazine working to “level the playing field.”
By that I mean we’re working on building a community where anyone, female or male, can talk sports without judgment. As a female fan, I’m subjected to a lot of criticism and negative feedback simply because I’m a female.
On more than one occasion, I’ve been told that I, “can’t possibly know what I’m talking about” which is far from the truth. I, along with my team of writers, are working to build a place where someone like myself can read well-rounded content and interact with others, including men, without being subjected to negative comments. We’re also working on bringing a little more “venus” to your typical sports talk site.
Specifically, we talk about planning your Superbowl party, game day appetizers, sports fashion, etc..
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is definitely subjective. For me, success means that I’ve accomplished something meaningful, something in line with my morals and that will bring a little joy and happiness to someone else.
