Art & Life with Natalia Nakopia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Natalia Nakopia.

Natalia, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
To be frank my story is quite ordinary. I grew up in a household where music was constantly present. My father was a loyal listener and a dedicated explorer of all genres of music, but jazz was always thriving in our house and till this day the two us share our passion and love towards it. Music was always something that brought joy to our family in the worst of times… it healed us, gave us hope, and brought us together. In every family gathering or a dinner, there was always this one relative who played an instrument and everyone else collectively sang and harmonized to it… it’s a big part of a Georgian culture, which is where I am from… at that moment worries were gone and the food tasted much better. I have been singing and writing since I can remember myself, but the freedom of music is what made me fall in love with it, how honest it is, and how it brings everyone closer. I studied classical piano from a young age but singing was always my passion and I wasn’t planning on letting it go. Today, I’m still learning and changing as a musician, every day is a new experience and a new perspective. I’m extremely grateful to be on this path and hope that the music we share as creators and listeners can liberate and inspire.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I’m a singer, composer, performer, and a songwriter. The gift of music is the manifestation of my feelings and emotions. I am often inspired by my personal experiences as well as by the experiences of other people… music isn’t just my story but it’s everybody’s. The creative process can be different each time… I might come up with a progression first and then improvise the melody…or write the melody first and then write the chords. In any case, lyrics are usually the last and the most time consuming aspect that I work on, because I truly want to execute my vision in the best way possible. Through the gift of music, I want to show that there are no rules in the art we create, and that we can truly express our ideas, thoughts, and all kinds of emotions through it… address who we are, and accept it. I believe that some things we can’t share or explain through actions and words, can be communicated through music, and that is what makes it so influential. I truly hope that people can relate and discover a part of themselves in my work, find peace and gather strength from it… and most importantly enjoy it.

What responsibility, if any, do you think artists have to use their art to help alleviate problems faced by others? Has your art been affected by issues you’ve concerned about?
I don’t believe that the role of artists has changed, not to me. I believe that all of us have a voice and can make a change. There were always issues in this world and inevitably there will always be, as nothing is perfect… neither us humans, nor the world we live in. However, each artist has their own mission, for some it is to evoke hope and compassion, and to help other people fight external as well as internal demons. For others it is to entertain and spread joy and love. No matter what our goals are, through the gift of music we are able to make fundamental changes in the society and the way people feel. Now, how one uses this gift is a personal choice. Artists find a way to deliver pain and emotion in the most beautiful form possible. My work is constantly influenced by the world, be it something good or bad. However, all I can do, is talk about it through music and hope to prevent it from happening again, share my personal experience and pain, and hope that people can relate and learn something new from it.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
Social media is a powerful source we can use not only to share but also to encourage the art we love. My Facebook Artist Page is the place to go if the audience seeks any information about my upcoming music or performances. YouTube and Instagram are also an amazing source to get to know me better as a person and support my work. I’m in the process of recording my original material, so very soon it will be available on many streaming services such as Spotify, Apple Music, SoundCloud and more. I’m extremely grateful to every single person who takes the time to listen and internalize my work, it enables me to pursue what I truly love doing.
