Today we’d like to introduce you to Becky Cowie.
Becky, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I will be the first to admit that building our brand was not done in a very cookie cutter way. Our initial intention was never to build an apparel brand, but after what was meant to be a side hustle quickly became something much more, we shifted our time and efforts towards growing and spreading the message that is Bold Body.
We started with a few simple designs to help our customers express themselves, and began building upon them by creating and designing clothing with the ultimate goal of making people feel empowered, unique and genuinely happy. I mean, how can you not have a smile on your face when you’re wearing pants covered in avocados, popsicles and palm trees?!
Now I’ll rewind to how we landed on creating a fitness and athleisure apparel in the first place. Long story short, I played sports my whole life, so progressing into adulthood, I needed to find a way to live an active life. I found group fitness classes because they mimic the feel of a team sport while allowing me the personal time that I need to decompress. I was in awe of the incredibly unique people that I met through immersing myself into the fitness community.
Boston is chockfull of amazing, powerful, unique and… well, BOLD individuals. I was tired of seeing the same old black leggings and felt that the fitness community was in need of access to affordable, fashionable and EXPRESSIVE athletic wear and we wanted to be at the forefront of that. We believe that working out and looking good while doing so shouldn’t break the bank! So that’s exactly what we set out to do.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not, nor would I ever wish for it to have been a smooth road. Learning from our mistakes, or failures has proven to be the reason why we are where we are today. I believe that you get out what you put in – and that goes for anything in life, be it relationships, fitness goals, friendships and of course business.
To quote the late Theodore Roosevelt – “Nothing in the world is worth having or worth doing unless it means effort, pain, difficulty… I have never in my life envied a human being who led an easy life. I have envied a great many people who led difficult lives and led them well.” I couldn’t agree more and believe in working your a** off to get where you want to be.
I will go out on a limb and say that if any business owner boasts about becoming successful without speed bumps, they are most certainly not telling the truth. We have experienced a variety of struggles and bumps along the way, all the way from sales coming in below projected to losing access to a portion of our supply chain for two weeks due to flooding.
That being said, these speed bumps were a blessing in disguise as they forced our team to think critically, creatively and quickly to solve some complex problems and allowed for our brand to grow larger and become stronger.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Bold Body Apparel – what should we know?
We are BoldBody and our brand is built around living life out loud and in your own skin. We believe in empowerment through individuality. We believe in loving yourself. We believe in being a little (or a lotta) weird. All of our clothes are designed with these beliefs in mind and want our BoldFam to use them as blank canvas to express themselves. We are here to help you stand out from the status quo and #bebold.
I’ve never been one to blend in. I am loud and simply put, I love people and finding what makes them happy. I love that our clothing has the ability to make someone’s day simply by proving that life doesn’t have to be taken so seriously. There’s no better feeling of gratification than to see the smiles that our clothes put on peoples faces – be it strangers, friends or acquaintances. I am proud that we stand strongly behind our core beliefs and make each of our products with them in mind. Simply put, if the print doesn’t make us smile, it’s not going into our store.
I think a few aspects set us apart from others. The first being our designs. We aren’t afraid to push boundaries with our designs and prints and find that people crave fun designs and standing out. The second being our price point. I am a firm believer that feeling good and looking good shouldn’t have to break the bank. We set out to make quality athletic apparel affordable and accessible to a wide variety of people. We want everyone to feel included and able to live Boldly.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I believe that staying true to our core beliefs is very important, but practicing what we preach is even more important. I wear BoldBody day in and day out and scream it from the rooftops. If you love what you do, you want everyone to know about it and you’ll do anything to make that happen.
