Meet Eric Derrico of Boston Massage Associates

Today we’d like to introduce you to Eric Derrico.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Eric. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was 4 years into working at a small plumbing outfit when my boss asked me “do you love your job?”. At 19 years old I didn’t think that anyone loved their work so I laughed and replied: “who loves their job?” He replied “… I do”. That was really the start of me pursuing massage as a career. As a child, my parents say, I had a knack for giving a good shoulder rub and as an adolescent, I was always drawing muscles in my doodles.

After 2 years of studying at the Massage Institute of New England, I landed my first job on Boylston Street. I worked at a spa then moved on to a larger, clinical massage practice which felt more in line with how I wanted to offer massage to clients. I opened my own practice on the corner of Boylston St. and Berkeley St. in 2009 and have been there since.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I certainly can’t complain. I have been very lucky and owe so much to my faithful clients. In 2010-2011 they got me through two back surgeries that kept me out of the office for nearly four months. Boston Massage Associates was only one year old at the time and that could have ruined a new business but my clients kept me open by purchasing packages and continuing to come back.

This year has been an interesting one too. My landlord approached me about moving to a new space in the building to accommodate my oral surgeon neighbor who wanted to expand his practice…

So after four months of negotiating, we finally came to an agreement that left me with 6 weeks to build a totally new office from scratch luckily I have a bunch of contractor friends who really came through. The process was challenging but it was all worth it! The new space is more than I could have imagined and I encourage everyone to come to see it for themselves!

Please tell us about Boston Massage Associates.
I am a clinical, therapeutic massage therapist and have been practicing for 13 years. I pride myself on being effective and efficient with my bodywork. My technique differs from others because I highly value the relaxation response with my deep work. I find the more relaxed the recipient is the deeper I can get into the muscle tissue, making it easier for me to release any muscular adhesions. This method also reduces soreness after the session meaning a quicker recovery from ailments.

Fun fact: BMA has a mascot named Bodhi. He is a 5-year-old blue heeler/rat terrier mix and makes an amazing therapy, shop dog.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Honestly, I wouldn’t change a thing. All of the trials an tribulations have made me who I am and I don’t know where I would be without those lessons.
