Meet Justin Siegel of MocoSpace

Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Siegel.

Justin, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
In 2005, after selling our mobile game company, Jamie Hall and I saw an opportunity to bring the success online companies like Facebook and Bebo were having to mobile phones. This is before iPhone and Android, so we are talking about the older phones.

Initially, we focused on a mobile Web experience and then expanded into mobile apps as they gained traction.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Ha! There’s no such thing as a smooth road in entrepreneurship. There are more challenges and obstacles than I care to remember. In the beginning, it was about product market fit. In other words, do people want a social network on their phones.

The obvious answer in hindsight is yes. We had countless technological challenges involving mobile phones and scaling the business. Back then there was no Amazon, no cloud, no community broadly accepted standards for mobile devices. Mobile was cutting edge back in 2005.

MocoSpace – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
MocoSpace has built a platform that helps millions of people connect, chat and play games with friends new and old from around the world. Our emphasis on gaming and chat rooms has set us apart in many ways from our peers. The thing we are most proud of is the positive impact we’ve had on our members.

From day one, we’ve been a very charitable organization supporting a wide spectrum of charities over the years including the Salvation Army, the Red Cross, WWF, Wounded Warriors, and many more. More importantly, we’ve helped create millions of friendships around the world.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
It’s not one moment. It’s about building a business and a team that has continued to thrive for over 13 years and counting in an industry know for short lifespans.
