Today we’d like to introduce you to Candace Morales.
Ambitious, charismatic and sociable are just a few words to describe Candace – an On-Air Host from Boston, Massachusetts. As a young girl, she watched a lot of TVs. Growing up, entertainment television was very popular in her household. She would watch programs that aired on networks such as BET, M, V and VH1, and she developed a great admiration for hosts like Rachel Stuart, Ananda Lewis, and Free. Although she was attracted to what these women did, she fantasized about becoming an actress on the big screen.
Candace always loved performing for an audience and putting on a show. She would become frustrated when her brother and cousins refused to continuously reenact the skits that she would create. She successfully persuaded her parents to buy her a video camera, so that she would always have footage of her work to replay and present to her audience. Without realizing it, she was honing her craft.
Years later, after taking TV production and journalism classes in high school, her immense desire to act faded, for she quickly fell in love with the idea of hosting her own television show. She went on to graduate from Salem State University with a major in Communications and a minor in Film Studies.
Since then, Candace has worked diligently to bring the dreams she’s had since a young age into existence. She interned as a co-host for the radio station HOT97 Boston, working with the world-renowned DJ Chubby Chub, as well as with the morning show; Notorious in the Morning.
Candace interned for Boston Neighborhood Network (BNN), where she assisted in producing more than 100 shows by operating cameras, controlling audio, creating studio sets, acting as a floor manager and directing. After a few short months, she went on to be part of a trio of hosts for BNN’s talk show: Girls and Guys. This show focused on life from the perspective of youth. Featured guests included relationship specialists, various musical performers, and Maurice Starr – the creator of New Kids on the Block and New Edition.
By the end of Girls and Guys’ first season, she was appointed to be director of Loud Minds TV, a talk show that highlighted Boston based businesses and individuals that were often overlooked. For three seasons, she committed herself to directing and overseeing the operation of the program. After proving her potential, she was brought on as a co-host and associate producer.
Candace continued to further her career as co-host and producer of the Boston based radio show, P.L.A.Y Radio, creating content based on entertainment news, political updates and the latest in hip-hop.
She can currently be found at City Hall managing the communications efforts of the Boston City Council’s legislative body. Her responsibilities range from publishing the weekly newsletter and maintaining a social media presence to assisting with the television operations of Council meetings and hearings.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Creating a TV and Radio Show is never easy. When I was hosting PLAY Radio, my co-host and I went through various DJs and spent a year and ½ building several different scripts before we had what viewers and guests thought was the perfect radio show. Although, things looked great on the surface, there were areas where we could and wanted to improve upon.
We were a 3 man team (myself, my co-host and DJ) and the magnitude of work we wanted to do and big plans we had became too much for us to handle alone. Putting together a solid team was often very difficult, because people would tend to fall off when they didn’t receive an immediate reward. The pay was small, we were just starting out – a work in progress – some people can’t afford to work for free. This really held us back in a big way.
TV and Radio Host – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am a TV and radio host based in Boston. I am known for the shows and events I have hosted.
At the age of 12, a dream was placed in my heart. What I am most proud of is that I have never deterred from that dream despite the circumstances that made me feel like I should have or the countless amount of people who try to convince me to do other things – because to them – my dream seems to far-fetched.
I make people feel comfortable and as though they can be their true selves when talking to me. I bring out the best in people. I can turn an “interview” into a real conversation, ultimately causing someone to let their guard down and say things they may not necessarily want to say. A lot of hosts listen just to respond. I listen to understand. That’s what sets me apart from other TV and radio hosts.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Wow! That’s a tough question. The proudest moment of my career so far would definitely have to be the Toiletry Drive I hosted this year for women in Boston who are experiencing homelessness. With help from the community, I was able to collect a large amount of toiletries.
Being able to hold such a successful drive with a limited amount of resources really showed me that people don’t have to wait until they have tons of money before they can give back and help others.
