Today we’d like to introduce you to Gianna Tenaglia.
Gianna, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve always known I wanted to be a Hairstylist! I had a mini salon in my mom’s basement at 16. I went to Shawsheen Tech in Billerica Ma where I grew up. I got my cosmetology license my senior year in high school. I’ve been working full time as a stylist now since I was 18 years old! I’m now about to be 27!
I now have 2 children Genevieve (3) and Vienna (newborn) and a wonderful fiancé Rob Capaldo! My whole styling career I’ve played with all different t types of extensions I e always been interested in trying new methods. Up until recently I was working 12 hours a day 5 days a week doing around 8-12 clients a day. This past December I became certified in Natural Beaded Rows Extensions. I flew out to Huntington Beach California! I went to an event called BMS convention I became level 1 certified in NBR (Natural Beaded Rows). I traveled a second time to Laguna Beach California to an intensive class to become level 2 certified! I was so blown away the first time, this time I brought my family!
Natural Beaded Rows is by far the best method of extensions I’ve come across! It is a sew in method using beads and string. It falls so naturally. Each head of extensions is custom colored and placed exactly where it needs to be for an extremely seamless blend. It is totally undetectable! Minimal points of contact and no tape glue or bonds that damage the hair.
Since doing NBR I’ve been able to adjust my schedule to three days a week and 9 hours a day at the max! I love my job and now I have the best schedule and I finally found my niche!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I started as most stylists out of school as an assistant. You have to start somewhere. It’s not easy, it’s a lot of leg work and a lot of doing work for other people. But you also learn a lot from those that you’re assisting. I encourage other to watch and learn. You can learn what to do and also what not to do.
After a long time of working in a commission based salon I decided to start my own business. I started off small. Not knowing a lot about the business side, I figured baby steps are best. Keep track of your numbers. I never did until I started my business. It’s important to know your worth.
My advice to the young stylists out there, find yourself a great mentor. Someone who you want to be when you “grow up”. It’s important to learn from others. That how we grow.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Gianna Tenaglia at Revival Salon – what should we know?
My most recent pride and joy is NBR (Natural Beaded Rows). But I’ve always specialized in corrective color, dimensional color, fashion colors, anything challenging, I’m not afraid to get my hands dirty. Sometimes you run into bumps in the road but that’s part of learning.
Do you feel like there was something about the experiences you had growing up that played an outsized role in setting you up for success later in life?
I was raised and surrounded by hardworking adults. My mother and grandfather own a business/factory called Sterlingwear of Boston, in East Boston manufacturing outerwear for the military. I have always had great pride in my family for owning such a meaningful business. My father is a software engineer, he spent very long days at the office and I know he worked extremely hard to get to where he is in his career. They all have incredible work ethic. I guess it runs in my blood.
