Meet Trailblazer Margit Fish

Today we’d like to introduce you to Margit Fish.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Margit. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
When I was younger, my oldest brother was my biggest role model; and because he was an artist creating amazing drawings and paintings, I wanted to be an artist too. The problem was I wasn’t very good at either drawing or painting, which is what let me another creative outlet, photography! From middle school through now I always have my camera on me, ready to capture the memories unfolding before me. I went on from there to study photography at UCONN, where I received a bachelor of fine arts with a concentration in photography in 2014. About a year after graduating, Full of Whimsy Photography was created. A business that focuses on wedding and family photography. I had photography as my side hustle for about three years; after three years of working my butt off at a full-time day job and doing my photography every night and weekend, I am about to take a big step towards making photography my full-time focus. It hasn’t been easy but it has always been worth it, being able to give my clients memories that they can hold on to is one of the most rewarding jobs I could ever imagine.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Owning your own business definitely presents its struggles, and the road is not always smooth. One of the biggest struggles that I have faced in the past was balancing my full-time day job and my full-time passion for photography. There were many times were it just felt like there weren’t enough hours in the day, and in those times it was occasionally very easy to get discouraged and have a thought or two along the lines of “If only I didn’t I go to art school…” And it was in these times that I would have to force myself to imagine my future and where I see my life 5 years from now. And let me tell you, it was never sitting behind a desk working some day job that I hate. When I close my eyes and picture my future, I am photographing the sweetest of life’s moments; a grandma whispering to her granddaughter “You are the most beautiful bride,” or a mother snuggling her two little babes holding on to these fleeting moments. When you feel like you are getting overwhelmed by the weight of balancing what feels like a million things, take a deep breath, prioritize your to-do list, and give yourself some grace to know that you don’t have to be perfect to be an amazing boss lady!

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Full of Whimsy Photography – what should we know?
Full of Whimsy specializes in wedding and family portraiture. I focus on capture the emotion of the moment; my goal is to provide my clients with memories that they can hold. When they look at their wedding album or walk past their family photos hanging on the wall, I want them to be taken right back to the emotion of that moment. I am most proud of the relationships that I form with my clients, I take time to get to know my clients, and usually by the time of their wedding or family session, it is like we have been friends forever. I also think that my faith has a large part of what sets me apart from others. I believe that photography was what my purpose in life is and that passion shows through everything I do for my business.

We’re interested to hear your thoughts on female leadership – in particular, what do you feel are the biggest barriers or obstacles?
I think one of the biggest barriers today to female leadership is that we are not always taken seriously on our business endeavors, as well as sticking to what you believe in and not being persuaded by what others think. First and foremost, it is also most important to be true to yourself.
