Today we’d like to introduce you to Carly Bazile.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I attend design school, and my professor Dr. Donna Cecere assign all the designer student including myself to construct design costumes. I wanted to design a costume piece that represented my culture. I was born and raised in the Caribbean Island, and my best childhood memories are when I dressed up for the carnival. Bright color garments, handmade accessories, make-up, dancing and chanting to my favorite songs.
Dr. Donna Cecere allowed me to express myself as a design by providing me with the freedom to construct a piece that represented me as a designer. During that process, I discovered my voice! Design carnival costumes are my specialty I love every aspect of building a carnival piece from sourcing materials overseas to the handmade embellishments. I was so proud of myself and overwhelmed with the joy I shed a tear while I was walking with my creation. I own it all to Dr. Donna Cecere for allowed to express myself and value my work as a designer.
I`ve been designing Caribbean carnival costumes ever since. I custom design carnival costumes for clients in the local Boston area, New Orleans, Virginia, French, etc. I currently work for Boston Soca Holics Mas Bandit’s a Boston carnival company that mass produce carnival costumes for Boston, Cambridge, New York Carnival parade. I’ve been provided with the opportunity to design prototypes for a new carnival company located in Castries, St. Lucia. I look forward to traveling and building my network.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Although setbacks, roadblocks, and defeats are all obstacles standing between where you are now and where you want to be, each one represents a different level of challenge. One example of a setback would be if you had a project/ shoot schedule with ten confirming models. However, seven models will cancel last minute. The biggest roadblock I`ve dealt with was learning how to market my brand on multiple networks, for instance, social media, Instagram, Facebook, notably collaborating with local photographers, models, and makeup artists in the Boston area requires a lot of work. I’ve learned the best way to succeed is building a team of like-minded people that work well together. I recently became part of the Greenline Production team. Greenline Production is a together collective of individuals in different art get along in harmony to create professional content and exclusive events. We hope to be able to display our talents through the projects we`ve built.
My best pieces of career advice for young women do NOT become obsessed with their career, don`t be afraid to try out different avenues. Take your time to find out what best work for you. Network, network, network learn how to brand yourself. Step out your comfort zone its holding you back from real potential.
What should we know about Carly B? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My brand is called “Carly B” I gave it that name, not because of ego but because I feel sometimes designers spend so much time trying to sound cool that the vision gets lost. It can overshadow their product, or the name can place in a box. Carly B is me and where I want to be, and that means to me the brand will always strive to be more and will continuously evolve.
I specialize in custom Caribbean carnival costumes as well as I mass produce costumes for a carnival company called Boston Soca Holics. Boston Soca Holics help me build my skill, getting carnival connections and also finding my voice in the culture. My target market is the Caribbean person that love attending Masquerade Street festivities, wearing custom-handmade piece specialize for him or her. I’m also looking to break into customizing swimwear, competitive fitness wear, burlesques, dedlah (belly dance).
Who do you look up to? How have they inspired you?
The number one woman that inspires every aspect of my life is my mother. I`ve watched her raise me as a single parent and nerve once complain. She worked two jobs, attend college; while raising two children by herself. She not only though me valuable life lessons but lead by example. For instance, she though me to never rely on my comfort zone, resilience, and strength are some of the most critical skills to have it comes to being successful. I`ve seen her go through some of the most challenging struggles in her life. Watching her conquer all her battles. If I can ever be half the woman she is, I`ll be able to achieve all my goals and live my dreams.
