Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Klein.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
After graduating from Oklahoma State University where I gained my Bachelor of Science degree with an Interior Design focus, I moved to San Diego with my now husband, Cody, and rescue dog, Bella. This is when Oh, I Design Blog started and when I started working in the interior design field. After gaining interior design experience and a few great features/opportunities came along (a feature on The Everygirl and Elle Decor), I decided to begin an interior design company on the side with a couple of colleagues.
A few years later, my husband was chosen for a great opportunity to open a studio for their Landscape Architecture firm in Boston. We found out just a month before we got married in San Diego and shortly after moving into a new rental home, which made for a very stressful but exciting month of preparing.
Since then, I’ve successfully grown my Blog and Interior Design Studio in Boston with no plans to leave. With these big, risky moves across the country, I have learned a lot and made some mistakes along the way, but I think I was just naive enough to take the risk and I’m so glad I did! I am serving all of New England and beyond through Interior Design services, Virtual Design services, Blog partnerships and more.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not been a smooth road, I’ve made mistakes along the way as I’m sure any successful entrepreneur can admit as well. One of the challenges I faced was when I transferred my blog and interior design business to be under Oh, I Design, I didn’t keep my old URL (that was just my name at the time) and I lost a lot of site traffic for about a year. Someone purchased it and I was not able to get it back. Since then, I’ve worked hard to regain that traffic and it’s definitely worked out in my favor, thank goodness.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Oh, I Design Studio story. Tell us more about the business.
I’m the Owner of Oh, I Design Studio, specializing in Residential and small-scale Commercial Interior Design (from Full Interior Design services to Styling, Virtual Design, as well as Social Media Consulting and Blog/Social Media Partnerships). What I love most about what I do is that I get to help individuals and families achieve a beautiful AND comfortable home that fits their needs. There’s nothing like hearing, “what would I do without you, Jessica?!” to reassure that you are in the right business. I think what sets me apart, especially in Boston, is that I’m an incredibly positive person (probably too positive sometimes), always smiling, and I’m far from what you would consider a “traditional designer”. I design homes ranging from Mid-Century Modern to Classic and Traditional – while you can definitely see my styling eye and techniques throughout all of my projects, each home has been designed fully to my client’s lifestyle and taste.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I say this over and over to friends, colleagues, and people seeking advice. I truly believe it’s all about who you know, especially in my business. I’ve met SO many people through social media that have turned into clients or even best friends. The connections I’ve made along the way have helped my business grow incredibly!
