Meet Gregory Waldo of Gregory Waldo Photography in Brighton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gregory Waldo.

Gregory, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was first introduced to photography in high school. I was fortunate enough to go to a school that not only had a really nice arts program but also had a very well maintained darkroom. I initially took the class because it seemed like a nice time waste and easy A, which I desperately needed more of since I wasn’t the best student. After watching the first few images develop I was pretty intrigued but it wasn’t until I started to shoot skateboarding outside of class that I really got hooked. After graduating high school and not having a clue what I wanted to do I met some kids from a nearby town that all skated as well. Two of them were already enrolled in a photography school and I would bounce photo ideas and knowledge off of them over the next few months. They ended up convincing me to enroll at the school that following February. I took an accelerated course over the next year and a half and graduated at 20 years old still having no idea what I wanted to do. Skateboarding was still my main focus back then and photography took a back seat to me living out my youth. I didn’t really take any serious photos again until I was 24. Skateboarding was over after a few serious injuries and I had a girlfriend that gave me the confidence and push to get back into photography. I entered the assisting circuit and started working for photographers around Boston. I was lucky enough to find a mentor that has also been pushing me and giving me jaded advice that only a lifetime in the industry could bring.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s the rockiest road I’ve ever been down. There are a million small struggles but the biggest hurdle will always be self-confidence. Oh and the pressure of social media. I absolutely abhor social media.

Please tell us about Gregory Waldo Photography.
I’m more drawn towards editorial portraits, whether it be sports or in studio. I find pleasure in trying to create a narrative or a series of images that convey a feeling. I think I’m more known for my commercial work even though I produce a fair amount of personal work. I’m not sure I’m the person that could answer what sets me apart from other photographers, so that question is a pass! I’m quite proud of the series of landscapes I made over a month spent living out of a car in Iceland. They were shot on Polaroid and I feel they are the most fluid and original works I’ve made so far.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Been more mature, studied photography more, not have been so closed minded, assisted as soon as I graduated, party less, there’s a huge laundry list of things I could have done differently but ultimately I grew and learned from each of these faults and I’m continuing to learn and open myself up for positive change.
