Today we’d like to introduce you to Edan Dayan.
Edan, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started in the kitchen design business by chance. Someone gave me a chance to work for them in 2004 which were boom years in the construction business. It was a sink or swim environment. I found out I liked design and construction and kept developing myself. As I learned more about both it kept me interested in learning more and growing.
I had reached a point in my career where I was interested in developing my own ideas. The only way I could see doing that was to strike it out on my own.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has not always been a smooth road. Being a new small business in my case meant doing everything including running a business which was new to me. The struggles seem to always be relevant to how to get from one point to the next.
It all started with: How do you start a business?
How do you get the money to launch?
Where to get clients?
How about credit, all the equipment, an office/retail space, the right sub-contractors to do the work?
The confidence to persuade people to give you a chance?
Then as time progresses:
Recognize what you are good at and not so good at?
What new investments to make (people, other companies, equipment, training etc)
Where to go next?
I find that certain problems can solved and new ones get created which is part of growing.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Plymouth Rock Kitchens story. Tell us more about the business.
Our company is Plymouth Rock Kitchens.
Our primary business kitchen design for residential homes. This extents to cabinetry and mill work throughout the home as well as counter tops.
We specialize in custom kitchens and cabinetry.
We are known for getting very involved in the project, are hands on, and strive to make the design process enjoyable for the team involved.
There are several things that set us apart:
– We get very involved and spend a lot of time with our clients to make sure they are happy with their project. It starts with designing the project, continues to helping select all the materials that are integral to the design (i.e., cabinets, counter tops, cabinet hardware, tile back splash, flooring, lighting etc) and ends with being present on the jobs as they get installed, seeing that the details follow through on the job site.
– On the design front we develop a 3D model of not only the kitchen space but also include all the adjoining spaces (in most cases an entire floor of a house) so that we can think through the design process more comprehensively which also makes it easier to visualize.
– In addition to selling factory made cabinets, we also have our own cabinet line called PRK Custom. PRK Custom is a cabinet line we developed in partnership with a local custom millwork shop that does all of our custom cabinetry and mill work. A mill work shop is able to make cabinet designs that are not possible with factory made cabinetry.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
It is continually changing as it follows trends. The materials change, for example the current color trend has been white and grey as well as weathered wood accents (in this area). Just like the general design trends in other industries (electronics/auto), the trend in kitchen design is getting cleaner lined along with a combination of new and old materials.
With cabinetry there is always the old world skill of finish carpentry and cabinet making. That part will always continue especially in custom cabinetry.
