Meet Logan O’Brien

Today we’d like to introduce you to Logan O’Brien.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I picked up guitar when I was in high school, and wanted to be in a pop-punk band pretty much from Freshman year till…. well I’m in one called Bad at Sex now so, I guess I’m kind of nailing it. I never had friends in high school that would seriously commit to being in a band with me, so I went to Film School. After failing to achieve my dreams in two fields I figured, hey maybe I’ll try standup comedy, and go for the hat trick on disappointing my parents. It’s probably the best I’ve been at any of the artistic endeavors I’ve pursued thus far, but that is not saying much. I did meet Dan Hall, who drums for the band I’m now in, through comedy, so it’s all come full circle.

Please tell us about your art.
My main focus is on standup comedy, and producing sketches/a podcast with my two buddies under the moniker The South Shore Boyz. That name was given to us by other comics in the scene, since all three of us are from the South Shore of Mass. We really hated the name, but we knew if we didn’t run with it, it would only haunt us more; so, we decided to fully embrace it. My only real goal with all three of those is for people to laugh, and enjoy themselves. It’s cool when comedy can have a greater meaning, but I don’t think I’m at a place skill wise where that’s something I can inject into my sense of humor.

With Bad at Sex, we’re really just having fun playing and writing music together. It’s more of a hobby for everyone in the band at the moment, which is good because it takes off a lot of the stress that I think some bands probably go through when they’re trying to write new music. We do really enjoy being in the band though, it is a lot of fun getting up there and just letting loose with your friends on stage.

As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
With both the band and comedy, I generally define success as people enjoying what I/we’re doing. If I’m up on stage, nothing is better than seeing people smiling and kind of tuning into whatever I’m saying, or singing. I think if you’re focusing on anything other than entertaining the audience, you’re probably going to have a tough time up there. The best thing about anything artistic is that people enjoy it because they can relate. So, to know that you’re doing something that someone relates to is really cool, and gratifying in a way that’s hard to explain unless you feel it yourself, I think.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
With comedy, you can follow me on Instagram at @loganjoebriden where I try to post on my story when I have shown. Or find me on Facebook honestly! The South Shore Boyz run a monthly show at the House of Blues Foundation Room with some of the best local and national headliners in comedy. Tickets are usually only $10, our next one is on August 30th with Tony V headlining. It’s going to be a good one! Our sketches and podcast are available pretty much anywhere you can find either, be it iTunes, Podbean, YouTube, Funny or Die, or Facebook. Just look for The South Shore Boyz!

Bad at Sex has a very rough Demo EP called Bat at Demos available on Spotify, iTunes, and Apple Music. You should follow us on Instagram at @badatsexband for any updates on new music or shows we’re playing! We’re currently on a little break from playing live while our bassist goes through surgery, but we’re using the time to write and record some new tunes, so stay… tuned? Woof.
