Meet Jasmin Hunter of Jasmin Hunter Photography in Portsmouth

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmin Hunter.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Jasmin. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started out in college studying microbiology. I learned darkroom techniques while developing images from an electron microscope. I was lost in that microscopic world, imaging everything from DNA to cancer cells for well over a decade. Every little creature has a story to tell, one just has to look for it.

In 2004, I started photographing my husband’s rehearsals for the plays he was directing at The Players’ Ring in Portsmouth, NH. I was then hooked on storytelling through photography. In this case, trying to capture the overall feel of a production in a single image.

Throughout all my work, I focus on the message that is conveyed in the image I am creating. I tell my clients that a photo shoot is beyond them posing with me setting up lights and clicking a shutter button. We have to think about what we are trying to express. If it’s advertising for a play, what is the overall message you want to present the audience? If it’s a portrait session, what parts of your inner self do you want people to see?

I am using this method and some new lighting techniques to tell my own story. It is being released in phases on Instagram.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When I started my business I had no idea what type of photography I wanted to do, so I tried everything. I spent five years doing weddings, which requires photojournalistic skill to capture small moments as they happen throughout the day. I’m very good at anticipating and capturing those moments, but I missed the one-on-one time exploring a client’s personal story. Weddings are often rushed, with very little wiggle room to create unique images and points of view. I decided at the beginning of 2016 that I was going to go back to focusing on storytelling and spend more time with each client.

It’s not always easy to convey how my photo shoots tend to run. I describe the process as much as I can, but it isn’t until a client is in the middle of the process, looking at images with me during their photo shoot that they start to get how different it is. It’s not your average portrait session!

Please tell us about Jasmin Hunter Photography.
I specialize in fine art portraiture. I create a unique experience for my clients. We explore who they are and I capture a side to themselves they have never seen. My favorite part is working with someone that needs a confidence boost. I show them how their spouse sees them or how a prospective client is going to see them. I give them the confidence to go for an image that may be out of their comfort zone.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memories as a child were camping at Hither Hills State Park in Montauk, NY. We would spend a week camping in a canvas tent just over the sand dunes from the shore. I would fall asleep at night listening to the waves and spend the day swimming.
