Today we’d like to introduce you to Anthony Callahan.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
After working in the Masonry trade for 8 years, I decided at age 26 to start out on my own. I actually started Artistic Stoneworks out of the trunk of my Kia Sportage. I used to fill the trunk up with as many pavers as I could fit without the bumper touching the ground. I spent countless weekends standing in the parking lot of Home Depot handing out business cards and chasing work all over the state, putting in 80 hour weeks. My first 3 years in business I literally put almost every dollar I made back into the business. I attended every business owner class that I could and did almost every continuing education seminars on the trade.
Today we are running like a well-oiled machine. I have found that the best way to run a business is to be the best at what you do, and that’s what we are. We have won Best Masonry Contractor for the City of Malden for the last 3 straight years, and I fully intend to keep that streak going well into the future.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There have been many rough spots that I can tell you. There were a lot of lessons I had to learn the hard way. Working outdoors means that you are at the mercy of the weather, and there were some long winters where I contemplated quitting the business and looking for a job. You see, my knowledge was in the stonework, not in business. You really have to learn both in order to be successful.
Artistic Stoneworks – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Artistic Stoneworks specializes in Hardscape and Masonry. We design, build and install driveways, patios, walkways, stairs, walls, outdoor living areas, outdoor kitchens, excavation and landscaping. What Artistic Stoneworks is known for is creating totally unique stonework. We want everything we build to stand out.
What I am most proud of is winning the award for Best Masonry Contractor for the City of Malden for 2015, 2016, and 2017.
What sets us apart is definitely our design factor. Where other companies may provide a sketch done in pencil, we give every homeowner their own 3D design along with a free estimate. Free designs for customers is something I enjoy doing very much, whereas most other companies will add it to the bill.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
To me, being truly successful depends on a few factors. Being the best at what you do, building something bigger than yourself, loving what you do, and being able to provide for your family. If you can check all four of those boxes, I believe you are successful.
