Meet Kellan Reck

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kellan Reck.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I grew up about an hour from Boston and I always had a passion for taking pictures and making videos with my friends. In the fall of 2010, I started the Film/Television production program at the College of Communication at Boston University. While there, I started working part time for the Boston Red Sox as a video production assistant. Six months later, the Sox won the World Series. It was an incredible experience. One moment I was sitting in class taking notes, the next I was watching David Ortiz smash a grand slam in Game 2 of the ALCS.

In 2015, I became full-time with the Boston Red Sox. I’m currently working as a manager of Red Sox Productions and absolutely loving it. I help produce/shoot/edit videos for our in-game show at Fenway Park and for Red Sox social media. I’ve since won four New England Emmy’s for my work with the team.

Outside of Fenway Park, I’m working on building my own YouTube channel: Kellan Reck. It aims to help inspire and teach other filmmakers and photographers some of the skills I use every day.

Please tell us about your art.
With Red Sox Productions, I build videos for our weekly show, Red Sox Report, that airs on the New England Sports Network. I also shoot and edit pieces for our HD video boards, which play during games for the packed Fenway Park. A large percentage of my work is spent building video content for Red Sox social media. Videos range from hype videos to player green screens to in-game graphics.

The main goal of my art is to inspire. I want someone to watch one of my videos and feel energized to go out and make something themselves. Anyone is capable of making something incredible, but sometimes it just takes a little push. I want to be that push.

What do you think about conditions for artists today? Has life become easier or harder for artists in recent years? What can cities like ours do to encourage and help art and artists thrive?
I think the internet has changed the game for artists. Anyone can make it as an artist in today’s world. If you love painting, start an Etsy store. If you love chatting with friends about a topic, start a podcast. If you love making videos, start a YouTube channel. There are so many outlets and ways for artists to find a platform these days, and I think it’s a really special time to be alive.

As for cities like Boston, I think artists can plan meet-ups and collaborations. Work with other local creators to build something bigger and better. There are so many people out there who are making incredible art, and it’s so critical for people to come together to help each other out.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
People can view my work in many places:

Fenway Park – go to a game! Watch the video boards, and you’ll see some of my videos and graphics. I am in charge of the team’s “open video” which plays every game just before the team takes the field.

YouTube – check out my YouTube channel (youtube.com/kellanreck). Subscribe and like a video! This always helps me grow. I really started diving into this space earlier this year, and it’s been a very fun ride. If you’re into filmmaking and photography, it’s worth stopping by.

Instagram – I’m always posting on Instagram. Whether it be fun stories or exciting images, that’s where they go first.
