Today we’d like to introduce you to Monique Griffin.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
When I was young, I would always sit and braid my hair in extensions. Not knowing what I was doing but I was determined to learn. I learn how to braid by braiding my brother and sister hair all the time. I remember my brother would keep me up late at night braiding his hair.
As I grew older, there were so many styles that I had wanted, but I knew my mother didn’t know how to do them. So I taught myself. I loved braiding. I love hair. Growing up my mom worked in a hair store and I would always go. Learned about different products and hair extensions.
Throughout the years I would always say I’m gonna go to hair school but never did. One day something told me “Monique, do it now or you never will”. So I went to empire downtown Boston and sign myself up for school. I completed the program, graduated and got my cosmetology license. I was so proud.
In the beginning it was hard for me to find a salon that was right for me. But I did. In that first year of working in my career field things were good, but I wasn’t confident about braiding. I didn’t think my work was good enough. I ending up leaving and got a regular job. I’m thankful I did that. It made me realize, never give up on something you love. I prayed and ask god to show me my purpose. And here I am today with the best confidence in the world. My work has been notice by great people. I found great resources to help me better my craft. I learn to be patient, consistent but most of all trust your process & only worried about what you’re doing!
Has it been a smooth road?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road. I struggle with having confidence and that’s one thing you should have with anything you’re doing.
I would say to all the young women who are just starting their journey is to have confidence. You have to believe in yourself and practice till you master your craft
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Hair.bae_boston (Alluring Beauty) story. Tell us more about the business.
I’m a braider by heart. That’s how I fell in love with hair. That’s what people know me for.
I also taught myself how to do crochets and I learn how to do a traditional sew in on my cousin. These are also services I provide besides braiding.
I’m most proud of my braiding and my growth. I remember when my braiding wasn’t the best but now its way better than when I started.
My passion sets me apart from others because for me it’s not about the money. Its makes me feel good when someone sits in my chair and get their hair done by me. Seeing someone walk around with my work is what I love.
Do you have any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general? What has worked well for you?
Not all advice is good advice. Listen to those who are gonna push you passed your limit. Ones who help you set goals and make you see the beauty in your craft.
