Today we’d like to introduce you to Robin Costa.
Robin, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have made toffee for many years as a holiday tradition for family and friends and was always told how “deliciously addictive” it was! My recipe originated from family and was always made in small batches and this continues today. As my husband and I started to think about moving to the cape full time, I began to think about what I wanted to do to keep myself busy which is what prompted me to think about starting my own business but doing something fun and that I enjoy. In 2014 I began to test the product at local venues to see how it was received. Immediately the response was overwhelming, and I was asked what else can I do? That is how the flavors evolved, and I now offer sea salt, cranberry, coconut, peanut butter, chili pepper, and peppermint (holiday offering). I also private label for Cape Cod Beer located in Hyannis making their Ale House Toffee as well as Cape Cod Coffee located in Mashpee making a Vienna Roasted Coffee Toffee. I enjoy trying new ideas and my latest product offering is a Sea Salt Toffee Trail Mix made with my dark sea salt toffee. I also do custom favors for various events such as weddings, showers, birthdays, and other special gifts.
Along with my wholesale business I opened a full retail shop in 2017 not only offering my homemade toffee but also local food products and unique gifts from local artisans and beyond. A tasting of my toffee is always available to my customers and they love that!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
As with any business, you learn along the way. However, I have to say, my struggles were few. I did rebrand my image from when I first started out and that was a huge success. Staying consistent is important and is definitely recognized.
My best advice when starting a business is to do your homework first and come up with a business plan. Start small and offer something unique whether it’s a product or service that will set you apart. Advertise smartly (as this can get very costly) and use social media to keep the public engaged. Most importantly listen to the needs of your customers, don’t fear rejection, and have fun!
We’d love to hear more about Robin’s Toffee by the Sea LLC.
My toffee is made in small batches and on the thin side. My flavor offerings definitely set me apart from other companies. I also use different colored ribbons for each flavor which is truly eye-catching to the public.
My branding is consistent (logo and colors) no matter how it is used on various labels whether for my retail shop or toffee products.
Which women have inspired you in your life?
My mother was a huge inspiration to me. She was self-employed for over 50 years. She loved her customers as much as they loved her! She was caring, kind, and always willing to help anyone.
