Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaitlyn Wright.
Kaitlyn, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I got started in Massachusetts after going to community college for about two years. I realized my heart was in the wrong place, and after much pressure from my colleagues and professors, decided to go after what I wanted to do! I went to Cosmetology school full time while also working at a salon part time after school. I worked in Massachusetts for a couple of years and then decided to move to New Hampshire. After working for a while, and building a clientele there, I decided to move to New Hampshire and started back at the bottom. I worked at a chain salon for a while and then decided it was time to take a step forward. I then worked at a spa for almost five years before, I decided it was time to make a move that was better for me and work for myself. It was a scary leap, but I’m so glad to have moved forward!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has definitely not been a smooth road! Particularly, with hairdressing, it will always be a trial and error. In this day and age, people want, when they want it. Unfortunately, there is a science behind the “smoke and mirrors” and, sometimes, it takes patience. Moving between state lines, and having to start over again was exceptionally hard. The best advice I can give to aspiring hairdressers is to just remember to stay strong, look ahead, be nice to people, and always take help from people who are willing to give advice.
Please tell us about Stylist Kate Wink.
I LOVE my blondes. They are all so different! “Nailing” a hairline is my greatest (weird I know) joy. I also love doing updo’s!
Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well positioned for?
I feel as though any woman can accomplish anything they have a passion for. All they need to have is a positive attitude and a hard work ethic and things will start falling into place.
