Today we’d like to introduce you to Gary Fikes.

Gary, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am a freelance photographer living in Boston Massachusetts. I can recall falling in love with photography at the age of 5. Every time my mother took me to the doctors for a check-up; I would sprint over to the coffee table to look at pictures in the magazines. I was so amazed by the portraits of celebs and how they were photographed; that I would completely forget about the long needle that awaited me. That is when my love for photography began to grow. Today, I have been shooting for 8 years and I literally shoot all over the world. I enjoy traveling to many different places, seeing and meeting some of the most interesting people. Many people ask, “What do you like to shoot?” What type of photography are you in to today?” I respond, LIFE photography! Whether it’s fashion, commercial or two love birds tying the knot. There is no set script to life, it constantly changes. LIFE is full of diversity; LIFE is about taking chances (favorable and unfavorable). Most importantly, LIFE is about you. My mission is to capture every frame of that inconsistent perfection; known as LIFE. My images are meant to immortalize you forever. I can offer you that memory. That is why I do what I do. That is why I love what I do.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road. Like anything in life you put your energy in; you’re going to encounter challenges and struggle. Initially, I had a hard time getting clients. It wasn’t because my work wasn’t good enough, however, it was due to the fact that I was extremely unknown. I was so unknown that I couldn’t give my work away. People would literally turn down free photoshoots unless I was recommended by a family member or a friend.

I began doing several things to get over this hurdle. First, I started running advertisements on social media platforms, such as craigslist, Facebook, etc. Then, I began going to crowded places and to pass out business cards and offering free pics to passerby’s. This allowed me to meet so many know faces and personalities. As a result, my clientele grew and the quality of my work had begun to flourish.

Gary Fikes photography specializes in portrait, fashion, commercial, and fine art fashion photography. The use of the strobist technique and a unique high dynamic range is what really sets us apart from other photographers. The company is most proud of its ability to consistently be unique and effective in a society where everyone has a camera.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory from childhood, was to sit on the hood of the car and watch the sun set every evening. I used to literally watch the sun vanish before my eyes, wishing I had the ability to capture it right at the horizon. That was my bliss! That was my solace!
