Today we’d like to introduce you to Colin Beatt.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I come from a family filled with creativity. One of my grandmothers was a painter by profession. My mother was an interior designer. Growing up, art was constantly in my life. Whether I was painting, drawing, or going to museums, my parents made sure my brother and I had plenty of exposure. My love for art and my creative mind led me to consider architecture as profession. After a brief internship in high school, I decided that architecture didn’t quite captivate me. Through my internship I was exposed to the Graphic Design department and loved it. After two more design internships in high school I applied to colleges as a Graphic Design major.
As a high school senior I had a strong urge to experience a new part of the country after growing up in Los Angeles. I ended in Boston, MA at Northeastern University as a Graphic Design major and I was more than excited for the next 5 years of my life. During my sophomore year I had started to lose interest in design as the classes were tedious, I was spending 10+ hours a day in front of a computer, and I started to realize my work didn’t stand apart from my classmates as I had hoped. Luckily Northeastern has a diverse art department and I was exposed to basic video editing in class. I had discovered a new passion. After two video production co-ops, several student short-film competitions, and a little bit of freelance video work, I was entering my senior year and had to decide what I was going to do for my third and final co-op. After some research and sending some applications I decided I wanted to do something special for my senior year and asked my co-op advisor if starting my own company could be considered a co-op. It was unusual, but she told me if I brought her a well thought out proposal and put together a 6 month plan, she would allow it. I got the approval I needed, and I’ve never looked back. I now have a studio in South Boston, a full-time editor and animator and two summer interns. I’ve been blessed to work with brands such as MasterCard, JetBlue, the RedSox, Reebok, Converse, UPS, and many more. I’ve been able to work with celebrities such as Kobe Bryant, Rob Gronkowski, and Nate Robinson. I love what I do everyday and wouldn’t want to be doing anything else.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I don’t think it’s possible to start a company and not run into any problems. I’ve had nightmare clients, technical problems that almost ruined projects, months where the next job seemed like it would never come, but I’ve also had a strong support group with my family, friends, and mentors who continued to push me and tell me to never give up. Being self-employed is tough. There is never a guaranteed paycheck, every month starts and you have bills to pay. It can be scary at times, but it’s also a challenge that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed attacking each month. Every challenge has been a learning experience and I’ve come out it stronger than before. Mistakes are okay as long as you can put them behind you, learn from them, and make sure they don’t happen again.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Beatt Productions – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Beatt Productions is a small, boutique video production and photography company that specializes in creating visually stunning content to help individuals and companies tell their stories. High quality production can be applied to any type of business, we do not have a niche market. Boston is innovative, diverse, and constantly evolving. We adapt to our clients’ needs and pride ourselves on having the happiest clients out there.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
While it is important to plan for the future, I believe focusing on doing the best job at everything you currently have going on is the best way to set yourself up for success in the future. I think our current plans for the future are to continue to acquire new clients and grow as a company. Ideally I’d love to open a satellite studio in the next 3 years somewhere warm, maybe a return to Los Angeles is in the works? I can’t reveal any other details!
