Today we’d like to introduce you to Richard C.
Richard, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
We started with small residential projects and that is still the core of our business. Customers called for quality finished carpentry where they expected attention to detail. One customer told us “you guys cut perfect corners, without cutting corners.” We’ve always appreciated that comment.
Aside from quality work, what allowed us to consistently grow year after year was good customer service. We have a live voice always pick up the phone, I dedicate my time mostly to estimates and project management. That allows for a positive customer experience.
My partner and senior carpenter Ed can then focus on carpentry and delivering a quality product. That has been our secret formula to success.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Becoming an established business is never easy. We struggled with building the right team and getting enough exposure. The first couple of years we focused on building the right team and we now have a network of associates from various specialize trades that help us on our projects.
Another struggle was exposure. Advertising costs have always been very high to acquire new customers. We now have lots of referral and repeat business that keeps us extremely busy.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Custom Carpentry Solutions – what should we know?
Custom carpentry solutions specializes in frame to finish remodeling. Our core specialty is finished carpentry but customers often ask us to manage the entire project so we have framing carpenter’s, plasterers, tile specialists, finish carpenters, and painters to help us deliver a remodeling project from frame to finish.
What sets us apart is that each customer works with Richard as project manager to ensure good communication and project scheduling. We see too often in construction where the owner is not only the Carpenter but also the project manager, the answering service, the estimator, etc. That model no longer works. When the owner is the lead carpenter there is just not enough time to be very responsive to customers and give them the attention they deserve. Our model focuses on customer attention and that is one of the reasons why we have positive online reviews.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My partner Ed Clark deserves most of the credit since he has been a fantastic mentor on good construction practices from on the job safety and cleanliness to a professional delivered product. As Ed often says, “you can’t rush fine wine.”
