Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristin Scollin.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started my esthetic career after graduating from Catherine Hinds Institute in 1999. After working as an esthetician and freelance Make-Up Artist, family tragedy struck over the course of one year. Because of these tragedies, I was inspired to open my own business in downtown Danvers. It was here where I was a hands on esthetician for nearly 15 years. After lots of soul searching and sleepless nights, mostly because it was named for my parents who passed within 5 months of each other, I came to the decision to sell my beloved business. Over the years, the salon became such a special place; it was very healing for my own journey of loss and grief and I was able to channel that into my work in a positive way. Just over a year and half ago I knew it was time to move on to the next chapter of my life. Having spent years developing a lash extension clientele, I wanted to devote 100 percent of my time to the lash services, as well as explore and, ultimately immerse myself, in training for Microblading. The opportunity presented itself to me to join forces with Allure Hair and Beauty in Peabody and open my own studio within their beautiful new salon. Thus far, it has been a wonderful experience and I am currently expanding my offerings to include the much desired Microblading to my list of services.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I feel that all small businesses face challenges, especially in the early years of trying to build a clientele. Speaking directly to estheticians that may be employed at a salon or thinking of opening one some day, my advice to you would be to be prepared to really put the work in. Go in on your day off, accomodate your clients whenever you can, learn from your boss, your mentors, your teachers. Especially continue your education to stay relevant. Speaking to people who choose to open their own business, be selective in hiring your team, treat them fairly and ensure they feel motivated and valued, and that their opinions matter. This is such a dynamic field and it is so important to follow the trends, or better yet start them! Success is a long journey, and you just cannot expect to get where you want to be without serious dedication to your craft. Competition should make you work harder, don’t imitate them instead carve out your own niche and stay focused on your own success and talents. And stay humble, there will always be more to learn.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Kristin Scollin Lash & Brow Studio – what should we know?
I am still in love with skin care, however, since my lash business became so successful I am focused solely on lash extensions and eyebrow microblading. I believe this has given me the freedom to advance my skills, focus on my clientele more efficiently, and hone my talent. I became a lash educator, offering private classes to many local estheticians and salon owners. I love to share my knowledge and help people that are just starting out. I recall being so lost after my very first lash certification and I never wanted anyone to feel that way. When time permits, I help other artists learn properly through one day-long session and continuous support. In fact, several people have reached out to me via social media for help after they have completed their own training, and I am always available to answer questions and ease them through any stumbling blocks they may encounter. We have all started somewhere, and I am happy to lend a hand to the next generation of Lash Artists out there.
Which women have inspired you in your life?
All women inspire me in different ways. But if I had to say what characteristics in women I admire, they are the go-getters, the ones that never give up, the risk takers, the single moms, the ones balancing work and home life, and the ambitious women who are motivated to pursue their dreams. I look up to and admire the women that started out with nothing and built their empires. Specifically my top three inspirations: Catherine Hinds and An Hinds of Catherine Hinds Institute and Julie Moon of Julie Moon Studios.
