Today we’d like to introduce you to Leroy Powell.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I got into cutting and styling hair at art school where I initially intended to become an illustrator; and I’ve always paralleled the two. I still work with clients to help them tell their story or advertise their product, but at the salon, the product we’re advertising is my client’s personality. I work at the best salon around, Station 8 Salon (station8salon.com) in Jamaica Plain! I get to help folks reach their aesthetic goals, and keep this beautiful world goin. And I still have time on the side for other creative endeavors, like my mixed-media painting, my amateur video productions, and my side business, the sewing and selling of SWANTS, cozy pants literally made out sweaters. Check out my online portfolio at GoLeroy.com!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Anyone who wants to become a hair stylist can talk for days about struggles. Working full time in food service while going to beauty school at night, doing student cuts for $1 tips, riding your bike to save money, always being tired and broke and drained, just to finally graduate, get your license and then be told “Congrats, you’re good enough to be someone’s assistant.” Looking back, I honestly did consider quitting a couple times. But, now on the other side of it all, it’s been the best decision I’ve ever made. I work in an industry where I have the opportunity to earn more money the harder I work. I’m super aware that that is not the case for most. In the beginning of actually being “on the floor”, the struggle is building the clientele. Now I book weeks out. Not to mention, I get to do what I love for a living. It’s an absolute blessing.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I work full time behind the chair at Station 8, doing cuts, colors and styles. When it comes to hair, I’m most known for styling, whether its up-dos or down-dos or a period look or something for an event. I love it because I can use these skills both inside and outside of the salon. My partner, Jason Burke, is also a hair stylist, and together we style on-site weddings and special occasions. Look out for our up-and-coming site, PowellandBurke.com!
What were you like growing up?
Well I’m the baby of the family, and I’m a Gemini. So you can imagine.
