Today we’d like to introduce you to Billie Jean Daskowski.
Billie Jean, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
As far back as I can remember when asked: “What do you wanna be when you grow up?” My answer was always what I was most passionate about at the moment… an artist, a writer, an actress, a musician, a makeup artist, a hairdresser.
The thought that for a living, I would pursue anything other than my passion just never crossed my mind. I am extremely grateful for that.
Although I pursued singing and guitar playing through my twenties, I knew in my heart that the theatrical element, the stage show, the fashion, the hair, the makeup that was where I wanted to spend my time.
I went to cosmetology school and then moved to the Boston area. I walked up and down Newbury St., got a job sweeping the floor and worked hard each day. I didn’t get ahead of myself, I kept it simple, I lived within my means.
Slowly but surely, step by step, enjoying each day to its fullest, I gradually progressed from assistant to colorist, to head colorist, to salon owner. It’s been a wonderful journey each step contributing to the next.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In the hair and beauty industry, we are fortunate not to have to battle in a traditionally male profession. However, misogyny exists in many day to day activities that often get overlooked.
In order to develop a larger clientele, I have needed to be as convenient as possible. That means long hours and little free time. I am passionate about what I’m doing so it doesn’t feel like work to me. However, the dating scene can be tough for busy career driven women. My experience has been that some men bristle and are put off by a woman working longer hours than them.
Meditation has increased my sense of self and consequently my internal confidence. This has helped me not internalize their insecurities.
I am happy to say that although I still spend long hours in the salon, I have met an Amazing man who has become the love of my life.
I just followed my heart and kept going.
Please tell us about Will Charles Salon.
I have been specializing in haircolor for over 15 years. The majority of my clientele are looking for natural looking results. and that means a thorough consultation is in order. For myself, I’ve found it’s the key. Understanding a natural look is not just the finished aesthetic here in the salon but also encompasses things like maintenance schedule, texture change, perception, home care, etc.
There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
I have found luck is when opportunity and preparation meet.
Opportunity’s seem to be few and far between so I would say… be aware, be prepared, stay positive, work hard, and find the joy in the little things or the necessary but not necessarily the funnest activities.
Plan for the future but be prepared and willing to adjust, live in the moment.
Stay open minded, willing, and honest.
Don’t give up.
Seriously, I just keep going and try not to get in my own way.
