Today we’d like to introduce you to Allyson Myette.
Allyson, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have always had a passion for hair, makeup and all things beauty related. What a better way to experience all that than to do hair and makeup. It is so special when you can bring a hobby and passion together.
I remember going into Boston to sign up for cosmetology school, my grandmother came with me. I was very lucky that my family was supportive of the decision to leave nursing school to pursue something I had always wanted to do.
I worked in Boston during cosmetology school as an assistant and once I graduated, I worked in every type of salon trying to find that perfect niche. I got into the education world by starting with a company called Blow Pro, they were the first blow dry bar in New York City. Learning at a young age how to blow dry and style hair has carried me through most of my career. When I finally landed working in Marblehead is when doors continued to open. I was able to audition as an educator for Goldwell Hair Color. It was always a huge goal of mine to be able to work for and represent a hair color company at that caliber. I also went through the Bumble and Bumble Network Educator training. I have spent a lot of my career in New York City learning from some of the industry’s best trainers.
Advanced education has taken me to where I am today. I was able to experience color education training at a young age. I was like a sponge, eager to learn. Being a part of the Goldwell network has helped mold me into a master colorist and salon owner. We are held to maintain high standards and a level of professionalism that makes us a world class brand.
I am a complete hair color nerd. My teachers from high school would be laughing at that statement. I love doing hair and more importantly, I love education. I opened a salon to educate and inspire other stylists. I want to work with stylists who feed off education as much as I do. We are a growing fast paced salon that is always evolving techniques and growing to keep up with the trends in the industry. I love doing hair and it amazes me every day that I turned a hobby into a life long career.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Overall, the journey has been a smooth road but I have learned a lot more than I ever thought over the last few years. In the beginning, when the idea of opening a salon was brewing it was interesting to hear that I was too young and I should wait. Well, when you have worked hard and an opportunity presents itself, Why wait? Jump. My biggest piece of advice is to jump. You will never quite feel ready or feel like you have enough money but trust the process and jump.
Be kind to clients, to employees and everyone else in between. People can feel your energy. Leave your struggle at the door. People will always remember how you made them feel. That goes a long way more than any haircut can.
As a fellow young woman take the jump. Don’t be afraid to fail. Be kind. Surround yourself with positive people and find a support system that has your best interest. When you can naturally give out good energy it will come back to you.
what should we know about The Designory Hair and Makeup Studio? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Hair color is my specialty. I can truly be an artist. I found a niche in the world of hair color by being an educator for Goldwell Hair Color. I have become a complete hair color nerd. I love to know the why and the how of hair color. When someone sits in my chair I am able to completely customize a hair color for their every need diving deeper below the surface.
I am most proud of the clientele I have grown over the last few years. Without that clientele, I would not be where I am today. I can’t thank each and every one of them for their support.
As a salon, we specialize in hair color especially blondes and balayage hair painting.
I believe what sets us apart is fair and reasonable prices for services and our advanced education training. We continue to train with the best of the industry to enhance our skills.
I love to work with blondes hair. Double process blondes, high lights, and balayage hair painting. Achieving the perfect shade of blonde is a delicate, time-consuming process and I have learned patience and knowledge is key.
For good reason, society often focuses more on the problems rather than the opportunities that exist, because the problems need to be solved. However, we’d probably also benefit from looking for and recognizing the opportunities that women are better positioned to capitalize on. Have you discovered such opportunities?
I believe that there are so many opportunities for women. If you want it you can get it. I think as a society we forget how far women have come. I personally have never felt inferior to a man as a business owner. I have many fellow salon owners, men including that have been so helpful with advice and support.
It is amazing that we as women are able to open businesses, hire employees and make crucial decisions. There are so many influential women, especially in the hair industry. I would never let anyone stop me from doing what I am doing. It doesn’t matter what your gender is as long as you work hard, stay humble and do your craft well.
We are so lucky that women before us fought for our rights. It is up to us, especially women in business to continue to make strides to have more women business owners.
