Life and Work with Phoebe Vatis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Phoebe Vatis.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I always enjoyed writing and photography, particularly when Instagram emerged during my freshman year of high school. I never saw myself pursuing anything in this area until my freshman year of college when I was introduced to College Fashionista, a digital publication, and community that offer fashion-related opportunities to college students. For the past two years, I have gained experience with photography and publishing articles, as well as being introduced to the concept of building my own brand. This has evolved into a way of sharing my passion for all things lifestyle, fashion, and wellness. I have recently begun posting videos on YouTube as well and I hope to inspire people through all of these platforms.

Has it been a smooth road?
Social media has tended to be a “one step backward, two steps forward” process in my experience. Whenever I find my page growing, I notice that a decline follows. This has kept me on my toes and required me to find different ways to maintain growth, such as engaging more with other creators and their content.

My advice to anyone who is trying to grow their social media presence is to be active and post meaningful content. I also recommend engaging with other creators, whether it looks like commenting on their content or sending a friendly message. This also is a great way to foster positivity online!

The bottom line is to not get discouraged. The journey is never linear but that does not mean anyone should give up. If you are finding yourself feeling stuck, challenge yourself to try different methods and change up your content.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with your business – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Up to this point, I have been known mostly for my fashion-related content. While this is something I love and enjoy, I feel as though I have more to share. I think the fact that I am vegan at a young age sets me apart from others. I try to subtly speak about it so as to not come off in a way that turns people off, but I feel compelled to incorporate it into my content as it is something I am so passionate about. Currently, I am focused on growing my YouTube channel. Since it is a platform that can reach so many people, I hope to share my passion and knowledge about health and lifestyle.

There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
Don’t be afraid to message people! I have made some great friends both in Boston and abroad from simply sending or receiving a message on Instagram about meeting up. This is such a great way to network with others who have different visions and can inspire something new in your work. I have never had one mentor, so I look to others for inspiration and try to analyze their strengths. Learning through observation is how I’ve gotten to where I am today and has helped me sharpen my skills.
