Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Afonso.
Laura, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Buns and Bites is exactly what it sounds like, foodies and booties! A combination of two things I have a great appreciation for, Buns and Bites showcases my favorite eats along with a diverse cast of models, together with promoting body positivity amongst women. I had initially wanted to share my hobby of going out to eat by blogging about it but really wanted to incorporate a unique aspect to make it fun and relatable. We work with women of all shapes and sizes, of all ages and backgrounds. We are for every woman and encourage the girls to love themselves and the food they enjoy. Eat your hearts out, babes!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In all honesty, the road for Buns and Bites has been surprisingly smooth. That being said, there is an incredible amount of work that goes into creating the content we share, along with a team of individuals who believe in our missions. I started Buns and Bites just over a year ago and was very well received in the community, growing to close to ten thousand followers on Instagram. I could not have accomplished all of this without all of the support from photographers, models, restaurants and of course my followers!
Being social media based, Buns and Bites is susceptible to the harsh attacks of strangers hiding behind their screens. We make sure to never take cyber bullies comments to heart, and to always face negativity with a delightfully kind response, and always encouraged these people to educate themselves on our body positive mission. We are here to have fun, eat well, and love ourselves. So there is no room or time to entertain anything other than great vibes.
My advice to other women starting their journey would be to maintain confidence in your mission. You may find yourself in instances of self-doubt. You will be met with interference, roadblocks, judgment, and every other reason to deter you from pursuing your goal but the only person who can choose to continue on is you! Stay solid, patient, and maintain your unwavering perseverance.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Buns and Bites – what should we know?
Buns and Bites is composed of your average babe! I think that what I truly enjoy about running Buns and Bites is representing all of the hungry girls out there! I mean that literally and figuratively; girls who have a passion and want to bring their goals to fruition as well as young women who love to eat and aren’t scared to scarf down a slice of two. We specialize in self-love and good food, plain and simple.
Buns and Bites is unique and was started as the first of its kind. Of course, there are food blogs, and there are fitness booty blogs. Buns and Bites wondered why these two awfully popular categories existed in separate realms and worked to bring the two beloveds together. We aim to produce completely authentic and one of a kind content to our followers.
What’s the most important piece of advice you could give to a young woman just starting her career?
My advice is to kick the notion of “It’s a man’s world” right out the door. The girls club is more powerful than ever and we should take full advantage of that, ladies!
I would advise young women entering their careers to remind themselves on the daily that they are capable of exceeding their own expectations. Maintain your confidence when you are faced with negativity, and doubt, which happens! People (even those close to me) laughed when I pitched my idea for Buns and Bites. If I had listened to their advice or words to deter me from my goals, I wouldn’t be here trying this right now!
My final word of advice is to eat your hearts out, babes!!! If you feel good about the way you look and feel, you won’t need validation from another soul. Own your body, every inch of it. Savor and enjoy the food you love, and remind yourself daily how badass you are!
