Meet Nayana McLaughlin of MN McLaughlin Group | LAER Realty Partners in Andover

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nayana McLaughlin.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Nayana. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was born in Lowell, Massachusetts, after my parents settled here from Puerto Rico. My family didn’t have much growing up but we what didn’t have financially we made up with each other. Coming from such humble beginnings I always strived for more. My role model growing up was my mother. She was a shining light during some very dark times. To me, she represented inspiration, courage, and determination. No matter how difficult things got, she never gave up and always kept fighting not only for herself but also for her family. My mother was very popular in our neighborhood. There was no problem that she couldn’t help overcome. Watching and sometimes helping her make clothes for the neighborhood kids was always an amazing experience. What others couldn’t afford she helped to create. Seeing the passion and drive she had for what she was doing at the time was simply inspiring. Quinceanero dresses, first communion outfits, graduation, proms, all things that were expensive to purchase she would acquire the materials and make them herself. Needless to say, she had quite a talent and was able to play a huge role in all those young people’s lives by allowing them to feel beautiful on their special days. Her tenacity heavily influenced not only my passion for obtaining that which I wanted to achieve but also my determination to not give up during the chase for my goals. Every amazing quality I have learned from her was tested when I became a mother myself. At a young age I became the mother of a beautiful little boy. It was very hard but much like my own mother I never gave up. I wouldn’t have been able to do as well as I did if it wasn’t for her and for all the things she gave me.

At a young age I embarked on a career in Law Enforcement. I was one of a few women that worked in the prison system, and the youngest at only 19. It was by no means an easy job. I was fortunate enough to have strong women around me to take me under their wings and teach me how to thrive in such a stressful male dominated environment. My experience has helped me to develop a strong work ethic and a very thick skin. I was selected to be a member of the Crisis Negotiation Team where I received training from the FBI and other top law enforcement agencies throughout the country.

At 23 I decided that I was going to take a chance and I purchased my first investment property with my husband. I fell in love with the demolition as well as the before and after appearance of something I had worked hard on. It was HGTV before the cameras, except I wasn’t sitting on the couch watching someone else sweat and work, we were doing it ourselves. It is an entirely different experience when you are the one doing all of the sweating, breaking down walls then building them back up. After 20 years in corrections and having a family, I decided it was time to change career paths. I realized that after multiple transactions, becoming a landlord to multiple properties, weathering the real estate collapse that I had acquired a wealth of knowledge. It was time to utilize that knowledge to provide more opportunities for my family. I always had the desire to chase my dreams. Real Estate has become that passion. The fact that I am doing it with my family makes it that much more special to me.

In order to share this dream of mine with my family, my husband and I decided to start our own real estate group with LAER Realty Partners, the MN McLaughlin Group. I truly feel with the resources offered by LAER and our real world experience we are able to give our clients the best services in New England. On weekends, my husband our two children and I visit neighborhoods. We knock on doors, drop off information and chat with the residents. I can’t tell you how gratifying it is to watch our 17 and 24 year old talking with a homeowner about our family business. It is the most satisfying part of my job, knowing the confidence, knowledge and strength of character that both of our children possess.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Anyone that takes that leap to start a company does it with faith. Faith that things are going to work out as planned. It never goes as planned, though. You’ll make mistakes, hit crossroads and plenty of bumps along the way. I believe that having patience and trusting myself, believing that I’m making the right plans and sticking to them, is key. In order for me to stay determined and committed, I can’t doubt my abilities and that for me, has been my biggest challenge. Time management is my biggest struggle. Knowing how to split your time between growing your business, your family and your day to day routines has been pretty challenging. Another big challenge is learning how to stretch resources. It’s very challenging to create new strategic partnerships while maintaining existing relationships. Finding individuals and organizations that share your goals and being able to take advantage of those opportunities and not let them go by the wayside is always difficult

For me, prioritizing is a tough one, everything seems to be equally as important. But knowing how to prioritize where it best suits the growth of the company as well as your personal growth is the greatest challenge of all individuals seeking balance.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Buying a home is one of the biggest purchases we’ll make in our lifetime and selling a home can be a very emotional time. Memories are created in these houses we later call home. Handling these transactions with care and knowledge is the only way a good Realtor should get the job done. There is a lot of trust that goes with choosing who handles your biggest possession. Respecting their wishes, their choices and their most valuable possession is a must. When you genuinely care it shines through and every one of my clients know that from the first time we meet. My clients start off as my clients but our relationship always evolves into friendship and family because that is exactly how my clients are treated, like family.
