Today we’d like to introduce you to Susan Hough.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
About 12 years ago my son wanted to make his Grandmother a necklace for Christmas, and we began to make jewelry together. We enjoyed making jewelry as gifts and, eventually I started selling my jewelry at craft fairs, farmers markets, and local shops. My family and I were at the beach in Rockport about three years later, and I happened to see a “help wanted” sign in the bead shop there. I thought “that’s my job!” I worked there as a manager for several years before the owner offered to sell me the business. She said she wanted to sell it to someone who loved it as much as she did. That is certainly true- I do love making jewelry, teaching classes, and talking to people visiting Rockport. I’ve been a small business owner for about two years, and it continues to be a family affair. My daughter works with me and designs beautiful jewelry and my son helps with social media.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It is challenging to run a business that relies mostly on summer tourists. Although I am open year round, most people don’t consider Rockport a destination in the winter months. That perception has slowly been changing with the great musical artists and other events at the Shalin Lui that are bringing people to the area. Some restaurants and shops have been extending their winter hours as a result, making it a more desirable place to visit any time of year.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Seaside Boutique and Beads – what should we know?
Seaside Boutique and Beads features handmade jewelry and purses, paintings by local artists, and other unique handmade items. The shop also has a large selection of beads and jewelry making supplies. Customers can design jewelry for us to assemble or receive instruction and assistance in completing the project in our workshop. This private room can also be reserved for bridal parties, birthdays, or other groups. We are not only a place to shop but also a place to create.
My daughter and I design and create the jewelry in the shop. Rockport is an artist community and we enjoy featuring unique handmade items and supporting other local artists. We are known for our reasonable prices and friendly and helpful service.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My daughter, who is 16, deserves much credit for her creative’s abilities, organizational skills, and assistance at the shop. Lucinda is an incredible asset to the business! Her unique jewelry designs are beautiful. And customers love the seasonal window displays she creates.
