Today we’d like to introduce you to Timna Nwokeji.
Timna, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My journey started with my love of food/ all things local and reviewing all the places I would go to eat and explore. My husband encouraged me to start a physical blog to write about my adventures so that others could see what I had to say and in a way go along on the adventure with me. This then grew into fashion, travel and more; a lifestyle type of feel. Along the way I made new relationships, built up a network of local colleagues and businesses and grew it into what it is today. A place where people can come and see what they could do and eat in the different places I go to. I work alongside small businesses, brands and other bloggers to create a community where everyone is welcome to come along my journeys.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I think there are ups and downs with anything you do in life. Blogging is not exempt from this. I had to learn some things the hard way but I have been blessed with a strong support system who push me and encourage me every step of the way. My husband has been my number one supporter since day one and has helped me overcome any obstacles or struggles that come out of this. Out of the struggles I have made new friends who have become mentors to help me along this journey and that has been amazing as well.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Life as a Maven curates experiences for others. Whether it’s a new restaurant that people want to learn about or a new recipe or what’s in with local fashion – Life as a Maven’s goal has always been to share knowledge. The word Maven is the Hebrew word for “a trusted expert in a particular field who seeks to pass on that knowledge to someone else.”
Something I love is that I can be walking down the street (especially where I live) and someone will say “Hey I know you, you are Life as a Maven”. That makes me so happy and proud of who I have become and what I have been able to provide to the community.
Community and local have always come first for my blog. Whether it’s using as many fresh and local ingredients as possible in my recipes or support local fashion boutiques or going to newly opened local restaurants: this has always been what my blog is about.
What were you like growing up?
I was always a curious, extremely outgoing child. I was mischievous, always running around and I loved to explore. Something that never changed was my complete love of food. I remember when I was living in Puerto Rico and watching my Abuela (Grandmother) cook was one of my favorite things to do. My mom also taught me from a young age to be independent in the kitchen, something I will always cherish.
