Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Nourse.
Jennifer, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My business began over 70 years ago with my parents Jenny and Dick Nourse. What started as a hobby for my father turned into a thriving business which has lasted for 3 generations. My father was gifted when it came to the technical and equipment side of photography but it was my mother, Jenny who took it to the next level with her artistic eye and business sense.
As a teenager I used to assist at weddings and as the years went I decided to pursue photography as my career. Trained by my parents, New England School of Photography and numerous workshops over the years. I received my Master of Photography from the Professional Photographers of America in 2013. Before joining the studio full time I worked at Beth Israel Hospital in the photography department and also a short stint in political photography working for Governor Frank Sargent.
15 years ago I built a new studio in Canton where I specialize in family portraits, high school seniors, children and professional headshots. Today my daughter Molly (3rd generation photographer) works with me in the studio.
Has it been a smooth road?
I would say the digital transition in photography has been the greatest challenge. 15 years ago when I went from film to digital there was a steep learning curve. People also think that because you are shooting digital that things cost less, this is not the case. I still own my wonderful Hasselblad film cameras which are over 30years old. Try using a first generation digital camera or computer.
With digital we are constantly upgrading equipment and software as technology evolves. The other challenge is that everyone is a photographer today. What was once magic that we created is now readily available with the new cameras on the market.
To thrive in this changing market we compete by giving the best experience to our clients, excellent service and quality products. When our clients see their finished portraits they understand the difference.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Jenny Nourse Photography story. Tell us more about the business.
We specialize in family portraiture, high school seniors, children and professional headshots. I am most proud of carrying on my families’ legacy in the photography profession. Serving second and third generation clients is very meaningful to me.
Last summer my daughter and I had the privilege to photograph a third generation wedding. When the bride’s mom contacted me she told me that my late mother had not only photographed her wedding but also the weddings of her parents and in-laws! This was an extra special event for us.
Its clients like this that make it all worthwhile. Capturing life long memories for people has always been a passion for us.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
What I hope to see is people taking the time to print their photos. What worries me is the online only photos. If people don’t take the time to make prints I am afraid their future memories may be lost. Our organization, Professional Photographers of America, has a campaign “Exist in Print” to educate all photographers that to truly service their clients they have to take the time to craft beautifully printed portraits and albums. I know my clients value their printed portraits. I love seeing beautifully framed portraits hung in my client’s homes.
