Meet Jenny Connors of White Wave Designs in Gloucester

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenny Connors.

Jenny, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
As I was going back to school for computer science, my then-12-year-old daughter was obsessed with computers and websites, and we learned HTML together (although she was much quicker than I was!). I launched my hobby as a business in 2003 and have kept it active since then. For many years, I worked a full-time job, plus was a busy freelance musician, but always had one or two private clients. When I had to stop working full-time a few years ago because of a health issue, I decided to make White Wave Designs my primary focus.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
For the first several years, I was getting clients referred to me from a colleague in the greater Chicago area. When the recession hit, her business slowed way down, and so did the referrals. However, I had some long-time clients of my own, and was able to keep the business going. When I decided to make White Wave Designs my primary source of income, I knew I would have to begin marketing my business. There are challenges to being a freelance web developer these days, as the competition is global and, in many cases, automated as well.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the White Wave Designs story. Tell us more about the business.
My business, White Wave Designs, is a web design and development company. I work with clients to give their businesses an online presence. This includes helping them to build content and create a branded, up-to-date look. My specialty is small and non-profit organizations who need a secure web presence with a content management system. While I do offer WordPress, I prefer to provide my clients with my own CMS and “Admin Modules” for pages that need dynamic content. The admin area of my sites are easy-to-use, very secure, and can be easily customized to suit the specific needs of a client. I also ensure that all my website are fully search-engine optimized, which is so important these days.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Luck? I don’t attribute luck to anything regarding my business, but consider myself very lucky for many things in my personal life.
