Today we’d like to introduce you to Liz Perez.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Liz. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started my journey with Senegence International about a year ago. I was actually making jewelry and had my own little jewelry side business. I always thought I’d never end up falling into any type of direct sales company but when I tried the products, I fell in love with them one by one. I started out with some cool lipstick, and the burning need for every color (and a discount.) But I have gotten so much more than that from this leap of faith I took. I have gained some amazing friends, confidence in my selfie taking skills, and a ton of experience in running my own little business. I started watching YouTube videos and taught myself the basics of new makeup techniques and social media. I found the passion that I never knew I had in makeup application and marketing. I decided that this was where I was supposed to end up, so much so that I will be starting beauty school in the near future to pursue it as a full time career.
When I first launched with Senegence, I was overwhelmed with the support of friends, family, and coworkers that I actually completely dropped my jewelry making business and made Senegence my full-time side hustle. After a year, I am now matching my day job salary with what was supposed to be a side hustle and have met some of the most inspiring women I have ever known. And now, I aspire to be that for other women, as I slowly but surely grow my little team into an empire of empowered women, empowering women. Because in this day and age, the world needs a little more of that.
Has it been a smooth road?
I think honestly, it’s never a smooth road in running your own business in any form. When I first started with this business I absolutely loved the products but felt like a fraud. I didn’t love myself in a way that I needed to really sell myself and my business. For a long time, that was my biggest struggle, my lack of confidence. I was never the girl that would walk up to you and compliment you or hand you my business card but over time, I have become that girl. After several self-help books and listening to other women’s stories, I took away so many ways to improve myself and my business but the number one thing I’ve taken away from all of those things was to “do it scared.” I started handing out business cards, going to events, and booking parties, even though I was terrified of the rejection or ridicule. I offered makeovers and learned to take no thank you’s with grace.
My advice for every young woman who has an idea, or a business they want to grow is even if you’re scared, do it anyway. Because even if you fail, you will never have to wonder what if. And even if you fall you can get up and it will make you stronger and smarter. And when you put in long hours and make sacrifices while doing what you love, as the saying goes, “you’ll never work a day in your life.”
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Lizperezident Lips and Looks story. Tell us more about the business.
I am a Senegence Distributor for Senegence International, a multi-level marketing company. I do the at home parties, craft fairs, and other small events you would expect as an independent distributor. I began to really put an emphasis on makeup application and skincare.
I offer makeovers for women that include interactive lessons on how to use products once you take them home.
This may take more time than going to the mall to get your makeup done but it is comprehensive and I love spending time with my clients and really getting to know their wants, and needs. The flexibility in this business has been a true blessing to me and has helped me find my passion in makeup and beauty and has made my decision to return to school to get a cosmetology license muh easier.
What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
One of the biggest barriers I feel, in general, is the comparison game. Social media is only a highlight of a person’s life but it can sometimes make us feel as though we’re not doing enough. I know I get sucked into this mentality quite often when I see people running their businesses at every minute of everyday and see other girls killin’ the ‘gram game. I wish I could do that because I love what I do. But, you don’t know what people are doing on the other side of their screen or how much time and money they have invested, and you have to learn to be happy with your own accomplishments. The only person you should try to be better than is yourself!
