Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelley Tyan.
Kelley, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Growing up and being an only child, my mother always instilled in me self love and confidence. She taught me to only rely on myself and God and I can be as successful as I want to be. My disposition was always being a happy person and my outlook was always positive. I knew from a young age that I was born to help people in some way.
In my twenties, I became very involved with a network marketing company that catered mostly to women and I quickly realized how much they became empowered at meetings by being around these positive and inspiring leaders. Their whole demeanor would change. However, they still lacked self esteem and confidence when they left those meetings. This was devastating to me and that was the start of me realizing there had to be a way for me to get in front of them to help them realize how beautiful they were.
As I entered my thirties and had my second child, my focus was to lose the baby weight and put an end to the debilitating migraines I suffered with since I was 8 years old. I took the health and fitness route. I became so immersed in reading everything and anything in the industry that I realized over a few short months I had lost all the baby weight, and I hadn’t suffered from a migraine either. I decided that I needed to help every woman on the planet figure this out too, which would ultimately, build their confidence and self-esteems. Kelley’s Bootcamp for Women was born that day.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
A few months into starting my business, I got diagnosed with breast cancer. I had my cry, but I knew I had to get on my feet and not let this take me down. I had work to do and I kept my focus on transforming women’s lives and help them see how beautiful they were. As I was going through treatment, I became even stronger because I continued to workout, regardless of how tired I was to show other women that they can overcome anything they put their minds to. Cancer was not going to hold me down, and I was going to prove that to everyone around me.
My business started to grow and many women were being transformed in mind and body through my classes. My advice for women just starting on a health journey is, JUST START. Get your feet out of bed in the morning and attend a fitness class. Try as many as you can until you find the right fit. There is definitely something out there for everyone.
As I continued Bootcamp, I also started working on building my online programs for Lifestyle Nutrition and building competitive teams. Then, found out that my father was diagnosed with a rare blood cancer and had to have a stem cell transplant and become isolated in his house for 1 year. Again, my life turned upside down for a moment. I still knew I had to be strong. I spent every single day for 4 weeks straight at Dana Farber with my mom while still getting up at 4:30 am to lead my tribe of women at boot camp. I was also continuing to build an online tribe and community.
My dad was released from the hospital and it was the happiest day of my life. 3 weeks later, my mother and very best friend in the world, passed suddenly from an aneurism. At that point, I crumbled and completely lost myself. I was completely powerless and fell apart. I took a step back in my darkest hours and realized I could not give up on something that made me so happy, which was my business and all my clients. I knew I had work to do and again, I wanted to prove to women that when tragedy happens, but we are only as strong as we allow ourselves to be. My mother’s words rang in my head daily, “you can do all things through Christ who gives you strength”, so I began to pick myself up and I created a new program called the 8 Week Reset Program.
My goals in life were too strong to allow my circumstances to take me down. We have the power within us, we just have to believe it. My advice for anyone starting out is to focus on what you really want. Is it to feel better in your clothes? Gain more confidence? Become stronger in your body? Whatever your reason, you are the only one that can do the work. No one is going to do it for you. The road is always going to have roadblocks, but you must find a way to go around them. I have also learned that you have to surround yourself with people that lift you up, and if your circle is not doing that, sadly, you must find a new circle.
what should we know about Kelley’s Bootcamp for Women? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I hold monthly boot camp classes on MWF’s at 5:15 am and all fitness levels are welcome. Being a 4X bikini fitness champion, I have led many women to the stage through show prep programs that I have created over the years and the training has ranged from 12 -16 weeks at a time.
Right now, my focus and mission are in the transformation of the body and mind through my 8 Week Reset program and speaking engagements. I will be hosting a few events in Boston in the Fall spreading self-love and how to train your confidence muscles through health and fitness. I believe we will always be a work in progress and teaching women to start where they are, is the first step. I want to spread love, light, and positivity to women everywhere and teach them when they are healthy in their minds and bodies, they will become healthy in their souls. When we feel good about ourselves, we look good too.
What sets me apart is that I truly care about each woman that I have the privilege to coach. I become their #1 cheerleader and encourage them constantly with live FB videos and motivation to keep them going.
The connection is key to their success. Each day is a gift and I make sure they are doing something to help them feel better than the day before. I freely share fitness tips, workouts, and advice through my email list and on my social media platforms. Please contact me to get on my email list, I would love to add you.
Looking back on your childhood, what experiences do you feel played an important role in shaping the person you grew up to be?
I absolutely feel my parents influence me had everything to do with how I strived to succeed in life. My mother battled with Rheumatoid Arthritis since I was born, but never let me know her pain. She always had a smile on her face and never let the disease bring her down. She got up and always dolled, up, no matter how much pain she was in, so why would I ever complain or give up on anything? If she could do it, so could I. My father believed in hard work and always had a smile on his face. I never saw or heard him complain about anything from his work life and this made me realize that complaining gets us nowhere, so just keep going.
Sure, I have battled my own self-sabotaging issues at times, as most people do, but overall, I have overcome that battle and I can honestly say, you can too.
Being a coach and trainer, I went through times where I thought I wasn’t good enough, fit enough, or pretty enough. I would get so down on myself and pick myself apart in the mirror. I knew the madness had to stop and I always went back to my mother because she never even had a chance to go to a gym, never mind do a workout because of her pain, yet she was so happy. This always helped change my mindset and I told myself that being strong and able to workout is a gift every day, and I did not want to take that for granted.
