Today we’d like to introduce you to Carmin Familia.
Carmin, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I always had that passion for beauty and art but it never crossed my mind to become a hairdresser but It all started one day sitting in the living room of the sister-in-law’s house when I saw an Empire beauty school commercial that totally caught my attention; that very same week I decided to visit the location and I was delighted from the first moment I entered the door, it was like love at first sight, I immediately felt that it was exactly what I wanted to do and that this was written in my destiny.
After finishing my studies at Empire beauty school, I started my journey in different hair salons occupying the roles of assistant, colorist and also management, but I was not feeling satisfied, my heart was looking for something more… something that really made me happy in my career and that’s when I heard about Drybar.
I was very impressed with the concept, finally something different and fun that I would love to do, so I decided to submit an application and join the crew. I’ve been blessed during the five years with the company today I’ve become the most requested stylist in the BackBay location and the most featured stylist on the Drybar Instagram.
I also had the opportunity to be back to Empire Beauty School doing demonstrations for the future stylists at the school. Just going back to the same classrooms where I used to be before becomes the most exciting experiences of my life.
I put together my hair studio located at my house in Dedham and I love it, now my dreams are coming true and every day I feel proud and happy about myself. I’m so grateful to God for every experience in my career.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Not at all… it’s been very tough…
Starting with the language barrier, I came to this country when I was 20 years old I was able to study English in the Dominican Republic, but when I came to Boston I realized that I had to learn way more to go to school and be able to sit in a classroom and also make sure that others can understand my ideas.
My advice is to never take a no for an answer; always feed your imagination with new stuff, if something inspired you to do it! Beauty always comes with technology and science it means you always get to learn something new every day, and love what you do! Love is everything!
what should we know about Mina Alouette Hair Studio? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
People know me from my Instagram Mina Alouette Hair Studio, I’ve been posting my work for the past four years and I always getting reposted on the Drybar Instagram. But I always wanted something for my own and now my studio is a reality.
A sweet space located at my house in Dedham MA where I offered my services of coloring, haircuts, bridal updos and Blowout too… why not?
I’m a professional photographer too! Is more like a hobby for me and I love to combine both of my talents when it comes to share my work with the world.
What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
I think we put the barriers ourselves, maybe because we are afraid of what others think about you or your career. But sometimes, we forgot how powerful we are.
Back in the days, we didn’t have the opportunities that we have now, is time to teach our daughter to become whatever they want to be.
Nobody said it’s easy, but it’s never impossible to become the best of you!
