Life and Work with Kiara Medina

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kiara Medina.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Kiara. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have always been an artsy person. I loved to draw and to paint but when I got to college I got worried that I couldn’t really make money in that field. So, I first majored in Nursing for a semester. Then, I switched to Psychology and then after another semester realized that was not for me either. I switched to Sociology which is basically the study of anything that has to do with society. I love working with people, so I figured that was the right step for me. It was my sophomore year of college and I found myself bored in my dorm a lot, so I started watching a lot of videos on YouTube. I came across a lot of makeup tutorials and automatically fell in love with the art. I didn’t learn it to feel prettier or to look prettier, but to express my artistic passion through makeup. I picked up on a lot of skill very quickly because I had made a lot of time for it, it was basically my hobby. After a few months of learning, I felt so confident about my skill level and decided to apply to Sephora. I worked there for a few months and loved it but my dream was to work at MAC Cosmetics, so I applied. I landed a freelance position and eventually got hired part time since I was still in school. I had huge dreams to develop my career full time there and wanted to become a Senior Artist. After a couple of years, I have learned so much but I was not into the retail side of it. I was losing my passion for doing makeup. So, after I graduated college, I went to cosmetology school and got my license. While attending cosmetology school, I also fell in love with doing hair. My focus was always improving my skills and I always loved learning. Eventually, I quit MAC and now work a secular job while freelancing on the side. It honestly was the best decision I have made. My schedule is always busy and I hope one day to freelance full time.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. There was always a lot of “what if’s” being asked. Like maybe I could have picked a better career or what if I quit my job and I don’t become as successful as I want to be? I also had a lot of people tried to hold me back. Also, being or working in an environment where people want you to do “well” but not do “better” can be frustrating. I learned to block out that negativity and do what was best for me. I know it sounds cliche but honestly, when you stop paying mind to the negativity around you and to the people trying to tear you down, you find yourself in such a great place.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with your business – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
So, I am a certified Makeup Artist and Hair Stylist in the Boston area. I freelance and travel to all my clients depending on how far the client is. I feel like I am providing a luxury service and it is even better when they can have it in the comfort of their own homes. Although I do both hair and makeup, I am mostly known for my makeup work. I would have to say, I am most proud of being a flexible artist in terms of skill. Not every client wants to look the same, so I am glad that I can tailor my style of makeup artistry according to each client and their wants and needs. I would say what sets me apart from others is my skill and professionalism. I give my honest opinion at all times and I make sure that I attend to my clients’ every need and make sure they are 100% in the best way that I can.

Were there people and/or experiences you had in your childhood that you feel laid the foundation for your success?
I was always the kind to challenge myself when it always came to showing off my art. I always was ready to learn as well.
