Meet Leah Drew of Mind Body with Leah in South Shore

Today we’d like to introduce you to Leah Drew.

Leah, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Opening a business at the age of 23 was not my initial plan upon graduation. That being said, I knew I wanted to work in rehab & pain management after graduating MCPHS University in Boston. With this realization I enrolled in massage school with the hopes that working hands on with the human body would allow this journey to begin. While attending massage school I was preparing for a bodybuilding show. Like many women who chase the physical, mental and emotional strength that are accompanied with bodybuilding I found myself faced with many complications I was not expecting. I lost weight and gained strength, but I faced many challenges with eating habits & serious pain due to internal scar tissue from the removal of a pancreatic tumor 3 years prior. My pain led me down the path of discovering Neurokinetic Therapy (NKT).

Neurokinetic Therapy changed my life. NKT is an innovative approach to manual muscle testing in which uncovers compensation patterns on the level of the Brain. After seeing how quickly clients experienced lasting results I was hooked. I started learning how trauma in any way shape or form (especially scar tissue) will cause dysfunction & discomfort in the body until reprogrammed on the level of the brain. What NKT gave me over anything was access to an extremely supportive community of health practitioners and movement specialists around the world who were interested in helping me succeed and learn the importance of the mind-body connection.

It wasn’t until I stood on stage at my bodybuilding competition that I realized the true importance of the mind-body connection. I found myself being judged by the way I appeared on the outside rather than who I was on the inside. What was even more mind-blowing was how I could look so good externally yet feel so horrible internally. It opened my eyes to a new life of self-improvement, self-growth, and mindfulness and taught me the importance of functional movement. I learned that the mind cannot be disconnected from the body in any way shape or form and that mindless movements & strengthening will lead to a road of pain. These lessons helped me in growing an alternative & holistic wellness business where I educate clients on how to reduce their own pain experience, improve their movement patterns, and how to increase their overall strength while preventing injury so that they can reach their fitness & life goals.

Has it been a smooth road?
Upon graduation I attempted to further my education as a graduate student but fell short and did not gain acceptance into my school of choice. On top of that I was fired from my first 3 commercial training positions. It made me feel like the world was out to get me, and like I wasn’t good enough to accomplish my dreams and goals. Fortunately I was wrong. It took me a little while to brush off the dust, but I committed to my passions to finding my purpose in life which has led me down a path in which I least expected to travel. Two books in particular helped me through some of my darkest times, Mindset by Carol deck and the rhythm of life by Matthew Kelly. Today I am thankful for all those rejection letters, because without them I don’t think I would be a business owner today. Without the hurt, I don’t think I would have found the strength to pursue the knowledge of anatomy and pain management on my own.

Overcoming Anxiety & Depression has also been one of the largest struggles of my life. It would be easy for me to put blame on my childhood or point fingers at others (both of which I used to do) until I realized I was the one standing in my own way. I was the one preventing myself from growth; I was quite literally causing my own anxiety & depression. From early childhood through college I struggled with mental health, and lost many friendships because of it. Being able to look deeper into myself, accept that I cannot control everything, and learning to stay relaxed when things go south has been the hardest lesson I have had to learn. Balance is difficult, but I have learned to accept that sometimes I’m not going to do it right, and that’s okay because it teaches me to be better & learn from my failures. I’ve worked very hard to get where I am today, but learning to be comfortable during the most uncomfortable of circumstances has led me to immense amounts of self-growth.

I have learned to take control of my own anxiety & depression through things like counseling, mindfulness, journaling and meditation; keys to my happiness! I have learned that happiness is within me, and cannot be fulfilled by others. Rather I must find happiness within myself first in order to experience happiness with others. It’s important to note that my mental health journey will always be an ongoing one, which it should be! Self-betterment is an around the clock job.

Body image & self-love has been my other major challenge in life. As a woman, I believe society makes it difficult from a young age to love who we are on the inside. We are constantly faced with temptation and images that cause us to feel as though we aren’t good enough, making us feel as though we always have to be better and look better. The truth is, sometimes life gets busy, and sleep is always more important than getting a workout in when I have no energy to do so. I’m currently the most curvy I have been since my bodybuilding show, but I am okay with it because my happiness has taken priority over my body image, and I have seen the return in the results of my clients, the growth of my business and my own quality of life. Figuring out how to love myself and my body through every shape and every stage will forever be a challenge, but learning how to put my happiness and mindset first helps in learning to love where you are now and how far you have come. Body image & self-love is a journey, one with hills and troughs, but learning how to pick yourself back up off the ground and start climbing again when you find yourself at your lowest has helped me make the biggest difference in myself and my life.

Other than the increasing flow of traffic, part of the reason I love Boston & Massachusetts is because I feel it is a friendly place and is one that continues to grow in alternative health & wellness. Although Mind Body with Leah is located in Canton, MA outside of the city, Leah travels into the city often for sporting events, restaurants & to enjoy the beautiful city of Boston.
