Meet Ryan McEniff of Minute Women Home Care in Lexington

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan McEniff.

Ryan, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Minute Women was started in 1969 by my Aunt. In 2011, my mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer and I moved to Florida to be with her during her last few months, at the time I was living on the west coast. While my mother was fighting cancer, we had 24-hour care and eventually hospice services.

During this time I had an up close look at the good and the bad with having home health aides and nurses in a person’s home. My Aunt suggested I move back to Boston (where I had grown up) and work for Minute Women while planning to take over the company.

I had always wanted to own a company, but I had no idea what to do, my mother’s last gift to me was providing me the opportunity to realize that dream and to purchase a business.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
When I purchased Minute Women we were one case away from losing money. My Aunt was all but ready to close the company the moment it was no longer profitable as she had not been involved in the day-to-day operations for over a decade.

It was very stressful dealing with being on the verge of losing money and possibly closing the company. The opportunity was a win/win for me. If the company closed, it was going to regardless of my efforts, and if it didn’t I look like a hero.

I worked 14-16 hour days learning, researching, developing and executing different ideas on how to increase business quickly. Fortunately, we were able to scrape by and build up our clientele to where the company was no longer teetering on the edge of solvency.

Minute Women Home Care – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Minute Women Home Care provide home health care services to seniors and has done so since 1969. Home health aides help with the activities of daily living.

So when a senior no longer can live in their home independently, whether, for physical or mental reasons, our aides are hired to help with getting dressed, personal care, showering, meal preparation and medication management, just to list a few tasks.

In a nutshell, we provide peace of mind to the adult children that their parent is going to be safe and well taken care of in their home.

What sets us apart from other companies is that we are the most experienced company in Massachusetts. We provide outstanding service, provide realistic expectations, and strive to meet those expectations.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I define success through the third part company we hire to interview all our clients regularly.

We do this to find out where Minute Women is great and where we can improve. No company is perfect, but as long as the vast majority of our reviews are positive I feel we are hitting our goals, and the word of mouth of providing outstanding care will ensure Minute Women’s success.

For those that are no thrilled with us, we take that seriously and we sit and have a meeting to determine where we can improve and prevent the issue from happening again.
