Today we’d like to introduce you to Jackie Gardner.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jackie. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I first began designing in a floral shop on Martha’s Vineyard. During my husband’s career in the Coast Guard, we frequently moved. I worked in numerous floral design businesses during this time where I developed my skills and created my own style. We later moved and bought Moonset Farm, in Porter, Maine. Shortly after, I began working at Stone Mountain Arts Center where I designed floral center pieces for various shows and events. I first started designing for these events in our kitchen and later moved to our 200 year old barn. Stone Mountain launched wedding packages in which I was included as the in-house floral designer. While designing at Stone Mountain, my passion for floral design was rekindled. Friends and family requested my expertise and Moonset Farm Floral slowly, organically expanded. When the property across the street went on sale, I purchased it and created my studio. Moonset Farm Floral has blossomed into a thriving wedding floral business.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When I first began my journey as a business owner, I did most of the farm work on my own. My husband, who was in the Coast Guard, was often away. Farming is physically and emotionally demanding. After a long day on the farm tending the sheep and other animals I worked evenings. Many of my challenges were similar to those anyone would face when creating a business. Financial struggles, fatigue and lack of experience in running a business were a few of the many challenges. To anyone looking to develop a business of her own, I would remind her that hard work, persistence and a sense of humor are required in abundance.
Please tell us about Moonset Farm Floral.
At Moonset Farm Floral, we design all floral components for weddings and events. Showcasing our locally grown products, over half of the flowers and greens used in our designs are grown on our farm. Moonset Farm Floral is known for romantic and naturally inspired creations showcasing the unique personality of the bride and venue. I am very proud of what we have accomplished and am incredibly pleased that I am able to produce my own products for my business.
Were there people and/or experiences you had in your childhood that you feel laid the foundation for your success?
My family instilled a strong work ethic and an independent spirit.
