Conversations with the Inspiring Michelle Burns

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Burns.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve been doing hair for ten years. I started doing hair because I wanted to make people feel good about how they look and confident in who they are.

I’ve worked in Lexington, Boston’s south end, and currently, rent a booth in Somerville’s Spring Hill.

I decided to start my business with Marilyn James Health and Beauty three years ago. The name was inspired by my parents and represents beauty and strength.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It definitely hasn’t been easy! This industry isn’t one you can just walk through. It’s one that you really have to constantly work at and be open to criticism and critique.

I was bullied in hair school and this was my last chance to turn my life around and I needed to make it work. I just put my head down until I had to fight back. Quitting wasn’t an option.

And I won’t go into too much detail but the bullying doesn’t always stop in school adults can be bullies too! This can be a very tough and competitive industry and sometimes the best way to fight a bully is to succeed.

Aside from the bumps along the way, I have been very lucky to meet some amazing people who have supported me, mentored me, and inspired me.

If I could give any advice to young women or any women in this industry, it would be this. Believe in yourself. Don’t ever stop and don’t ever stop learning. Education is key to our craft. And don’t be afraid of stepping out of your comfort zone.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Marilyn James Health and Beauty story. Tell us more about the business.
I specialize in blonding and balayage. I love learning and staying up to date with the latest trends. I like to take classes in other states, so I can travel at the same time.

I love doing everything from cutting to coloring. I am known for being a blonde specialist. I also do editorial/bridal work and recently gotten into film and special effects makeup.

I’m most proud of the personal connections I get to make with my clients and that I’m able to make them feel beautiful and confident.

Do you have a lesson or advice you’d like to share with young women just starting out?
An important price of advice for a young woman just starting out would be; never stop learning. In this business, you get what you put into it.
