Today we’d like to introduce you to Erin Duggan.
Erin, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
A few years ago, I went on a really terrible (but somewhat funny) first date. After telling my friends about it, someone suggested that I wrote about it. So, that’s how I decided to start my blog. I had just started Tinder and knew that I’d probably have a ton of stories like that, and people love to hear about those cringe-worthy first dates. Since then, the blog has evolved to talk about other things as well (my inability to be a functioning adult, work stress, mental health issues, etc). And that’s where I am at now.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There were periods where I felt like I wasn’t being as authentic as I was when I started. It’s easy to fall into the trap of writing about the same things as others or taking the same kinds of pictures. I’ve recently started to realize that people actually appreciate the authentic stuff more, so I’ve been focusing on that.
What should we know about My So-Called Semi-Adult Life? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I think that I have a different voice from other bloggers in the space. People have told me that they appreciate how real I am in my writing, and that it sets me apart from others.
It would be great to hear about any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve used and would recommend to others.
I’m a total murderino and absolutely love true crime (my Favorite Murder is my go-to podcast). While I don’t write about that stuff, I do find that their humorous approach to something as grisly as murder is good inspiration when it comes to writing about hard stuff in my life. I’ve also started to write about live music shows, and use the Sofar Sounds app to find shows around Boston.
