Today we’d like to introduce you to Wedad Kaltsunas.
Wedad, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Ever since I was a little girl I knew I wanted to become a hair dresser. I was either playing with my sister’s hair or playing with barbie dolls. After high school, I went on and graduated from The Paul Mitchell School in Cranston, Rhode Island, completing 1500 hours required in the state of Rhode Island. Being my own boss was always a passion of mine and I knew some day it was going to be my goal to open my own salon. After achieving 13+ years of experience being a stylist at several salons and also managing a few, It hit me that I could be doing this for myself. I figured if I’m going to be putting in the hard work and long hours, Then it should be for me and my future. I have been in business for 1 year now and I couldn’t be happier. All the long hours and hard work paid off because nothing makes me happier than seeing my clients leave my salon happy. Making my clients feel confident with how they look and feel is what I want to achieve every time someone sits in my chair. I absolutely love what I do and will always provide the best experience for everyone.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road for me. I’ve hit many obstacles along the way before I got to where I am today. The salons I previously worked at were never a right fit for me. Having to move from salon to salon caused me to lose clients along the way, due to salon locations not being convenient for them. At one point before I chose to open my own salon, I was unemployed. The struggle of not knowing how I was going to pay my bills weighed on me every day but giving up wasn’t an option. My salon location in West Roxbury has always been an operating salon and I always thought it would be a perfect location for my own place. I happened to drive by one day and saw the space was for lease, I knew it was a sign for me to open my own salon. The struggle didn’t stop there though. Figuring out how to fund this big project, finding the right equipment, decor, advertisements, gain new clients…the list goes on. I started this salon from the ground up with the love and support of my family and I would go through it all again, if I knew this would be the outcome. As time goes on I know as a business owner the issues I may run into will get bigger and more challenging, but as I grow as a person and business owner/hair stylist I will overcome anything that comes my way.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Glamorous Hair – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I think what sets me apart from other hair salons is the dedication and attention I strive to provide to each client that walks in the door. Having worked in previous salons I could see the disappointment on a client’s face when the stylist’s attention wasn’t 100% on them. When reserving my clients, I do not overbook. The time you’re in my chair is 100% dedicated to you and to you only. Glamorous Hair is a salon that can provide women, men & children with all their hair needs, ranging from color, cutting, extensions, balayage, bridal parties, and keratin treatments. Right now, I’m a one woman show with plans in the future to add on stylists as my business grows. As a Stylist/Business owner I’m always keeping up with hair education, to ensure that I’m providing my clients with the newest trends in the hair industry. Starting from the ground up, I’m really proud of the amount of success I’ve been able to achieve in a short period of time since I’ve been open.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I’m definitely looking forward to expanding my salon with additional stylists and potentially adding on an in-house makeup artist. Once I am ready I plan on dedicating my time in finding the right employees who I feel will provide my clients with the same attention and service as I do. I’m looking forward to seeing my success grow as the years go on through hard work and constantly educating myself with all the new trends and techniques in the hair industry. Thinking even further down the line, being an educator myself is something that I have great interest in. Not only would I be practicing what I love to do, but I would be passing all my experience along to many other talented stylists.
