Meet Wayne Frieden of Reel Dream Charters

Today we’d like to introduce you to Wayne Frieden.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Wayne. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Reel Dream Charters was born 19 years ago out of my passion for fishing, especially fly fishing in salt waters. As a practicing school psychologist at the time, I essentially had summers off to pursue my dream of fishing the waters in and around Boston Harbor; chasing striped bass and bluefish.

At that time, after conservation measures to improve the striper fishery, there was a resurgence in stripers and their migration from the Chesapeake and the Hudson River north along the Atlantic coast to Maine. Boston Harbor, with an ample supply of baitfish, became a world class fishery for striped bass.

Fishing has fluctuated greatly over the years but Boston Harbor remains a go to place for fly and light tackle fishing.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The struggles along the way include fluctuations in the bass fishery, increased competition, and weather related situations.

Reel Dream Charters – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I specialize guiding anglers who prefer either fly fishing or light tackle fishing using artificial lures and flies to imitate baitfish. I’m proud to have had people from all over the world fish with me and the loyal clients who continue to fish with me year after year.

During the course of my 19 years guiding in Boston Harbor, I ran a Kids’ Fishing Program for 5 years and was an Orvis Endorsed Fly Fishing Guide for a number of years.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Good question! In the guiding business, success will never amount to the money you make (because one doesn’t get rich as a fishing guide) or how many or even how large the fish you catch may be. Success is in knowing that the folks who choose to fish with me have had a thoroughly enjoyable experience in a beautiful urban setting while fishing for stripers and blues.
