Meet Vyda Bielkus of Health Yoga Life in Beacon Hill

Today we’d like to introduce you to Vyda Bielkus.

Vyda, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Health Yoga Life (HYL) is yoga & Wellness Company I co-founded with my 3 sisters. HYL operates a studio in Boston in Beacon Hill, and we just opened our second location in Cambridge on Mass Ave near MIT! We were raised by an entrepreneurial mother who was way ahead of her time. In our house, meditation, coaching, exercising, and carrot juice was the norm growing up.

If anyone ever said to me, I’d own a yoga company “when I grew up” I would not have believed them. After graduating from Wellesley College, I started out in a much more traditional corporate company, but decided that environment was not for me. Then, I joined a fast paced start-up where I was able to have significant autonomy over my work, and I could realize the direct impact of my efforts. This start-up environment taught me a lot about building a company from scratch. At the time the start-up was bought, I had just started practicing yoga and loved it. One thing led to another and I transitioned my career into the burgeoning yoga industry. Ditching my shoe pumps to work barefoot was one of the best decisions I ever made in my life!

About 5 years ago my sisters and I all found ourselves in career/life transitions at the same time, and we decided to take a chance on ourselves and open our business. We opened up HYL to share the methods we know work for making lasting behavior change in one’s life. Yoga, meditation and 1:1 coaching are some of the best tools to reshape your body and your life, and the best part is they are easy to incorporate in your life and work!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of my uncles always reminds me, “If you don’t have any problems, you don’t have a business.” Any growing business is riddled with challenges but therein is the growth opportunity. It’s just like on your yoga mat, if you don’t feel any challenge your body isn’t going to change. One of the biggest challenges we face as a small owned woman run business (that is self-funded) is that we don’t have the resources to do all that we want to do in the timing in which we want. For example, we had been looking for a space for our second yoga studio for about 2.5 years. In Boston/Cambridge the real estate market is insanely prohibitive for a small business. Many spaces were either way out of reach financially or landlords wanted nationally recognized brands that come with deep pockets. But with perseverance, we are now in an amazing location in a first floor space on Mass Ave in Cambridge and are excited to build a rich community in this area of town!
