Today we’d like to introduce you to Victoria Fernandes.
Victoria, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Growing up amidst a household of avid music collectors, I was exposed to a vast range of music genres, which inevitably birthed a profound love for arts. Very early on, my friends and family began to count on me to inform them of the latest music trends and would request that I create mixes for events. I answered my calling and enjoyed curating the sounds of our social gatherings. It was during college when I realized I wanted to pursue DJing. I loved how music united people and wanted to have the power to set the vibes.
I discovered the Mmmmaven Project, a Cambridge-based DJ, and music production school and enrolled in DJ courses. I’ve now been DJing publicly for the last 6 years and I’m enjoying every moment. DJing is not only a passion of mine, it’s my artistic expression and connection to the world.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being a female in a male dominated industry has always been an obstacle and has many challenges. We have to work twice as hard and don’t always get the recognition we deserve. Despite adversity, I’ve allowed my passion for my craft to keep me focused. Challenges continue to fuel my creativity and motivate me to keep pushing barriers. I am constantly inspired by my fellow DJ friends and family, and the amazing women that are currently paving the way and changing the game.
My advice to other women who are beginning their DJ journey is to stay true to yourself and your craft. Don’t allow anyone to box you in. Know your worth and value what you bring to the table. Trust the process, have fun, and enjoy the journey.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about DJ Slick Vick – what should we know?
From weddings to nightlife events, I offer a wide range of services. Clients can also book me for private events such as anniversaries, birthday parties, graduation parties, school events, community events, etc.
What I’m known for and what sets me apart is my versatility, upbeat sets, and diverse selections. I would describe my music style as Global Vibes.
I’m most proud of being able to do what I love, wholeheartedly and unapologetically. I”m thankful to have a great support system of family and friends who believe in me, and have pushed be along the way. There’s a continuous learning and growing process with the art of DJing, and I’m still blossoming. It’s always great to reflect back to the beginning, and see how far I’ve come.
Finding a mentor and building a network are often cited in studies as a major factor impacting one’s success. Do you have any advice or lessons to share regarding finding a mentor or networking in general?
Networking is KEY! Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone, even if that requires you to visit a new environment alone. Be open-minded. Mingle, and always have your business cards available! Try and surround yourself with like-minded, and inspiring people, who share the same interests/passions as you. Go out and support the events that you believe in and introduce yourself to the people.
